Actually just a big oak trunk. Guy stops by my cut earlier this week and offered this up. Red oak spar felled after it was damaged in a storm. Been sitting for a couple years. Bark loose, sapwood punk, but rest was solid. I have a hard time saying no to free wood. buzz-saw and I, plus a few saws worked it this afternoon. I think it was 28" at the stump. We had an audience. Homeowner and a neighbor watched us for a bit. They marveled at our fire wooding abilities and tools of the trade. He is really good at trailer tetris. Face cord in there. Good load in my PU. Off to his place to unload. Several rounds to get yet. Over a cord of wood for the whole log. Fun day cutting and working together. We were both pretty beat after unloading.
That is pretty good when you can get over a cord of wood from one trunk. Plus, some good quality wood. Way to go.
It was a decent day. He started in a Winter coat and ended up with short sleeves. I survived with just a sweatshirt. Started out full sun but clouds rolled in. Cold weather coming here for late next week. Im looking forward to frozen ground.
Oak heartwood is very rot resisitent. The sapwood ring was an inch wide tops at its thickest. I can vary widely among oaks here. One more thing that attracted me to the score. Most of the wood i cut is fresh cut or long dead/down barkless.
Great time today. Feeling it now. I was doing OK until I stopped Had a fun time today it has been a while since we cut together and so much more fun cutting with someone. Thanks for the help and getting me outside for some fresh air. Nice day to be out.
