So I ran into a really clean low hour 460 and the seller is asking $750 How does that saw compare to a new 462 ? Don't NEED another saw but you know how that goes.
In stock form the 462 is the better choice for shorter bars. The 462 is a very light 70cc saw. A stock 460 is better for a 32 inch bar, more torque. The 460 is more of a workhorse. 462 and 460 are both total beastmode when ported.
I use them both and prefer the 462 for the lighter weight. I like the 460 and have used it with a 36” bar. For me the 460 would have to be close to new to pay $750. I agree that it’s a good utilitarian saw that works great with a 24” bar and can show up for the occasional long bar use.
I have a 661 with 28" and 36"and a minty 880 with 42"and 59" for any serious long bar work. Just caught my eye is all.
A 462 is close to $1200 new here. Used 460's are going for $750-850 so that's not a bad price to me. All depends on your local market. 460 would be old school, 462 electronic if you have an opinion on that either way. Either one will make you grin all day long!
I bought my 460 from a logger when he went out of business....probably 10-12 years ago, for $500. I can only imagine how hard he ran it, and I put it through its paces for years. It hasn't cut near as much the last few years, but that's about to change. It's a beast. Like the commercial says, no regerts! Personally, I'm not a fan of some of these lighter saws, they feel too plasticy.
While looking at this post it makes me wonder do the same saw cost more or less depending where in the country you live.
Determines if there are any decent/desirable saws available at all. Not many trees around here hence no good older pro saws.
The MS460/461 have more grunt than the 462 . But, they are heavier . I run a20” lightweight bar ,and occasionally a 24” bar . The 460 , 461 wear 28” pretty much always . My 462 is a first gen. Model . I almost always take the 462 with me ,as it is just a great saw for most of the wood I cut .
