Actually it was the X25 as "five" doesnt rhyme with "Heaven". It was no contest. TOH splits so easily, i was even one handing it. Had half a PU load i hand split here. Wish elm split this easily!
nice! I haven't grabbed any of that. But I would take a tree if I saw one for SS use. You get a bed load? Saw a lot of BL just outside of New Haven, mostly around municipal buildings and the like.
Youre not missing much. I dont go out of my way for it, but need SS wood to mix with primo hardwoods for bundle inventory. If easy and primo straight ill take it. I left the gnarly chunks back at the score.
That’s some incredibly easy to split wood if you’re one-handing it. I kind of wish I took some a couple years ago at my “copped my fix downtown” BL/elm score, just to see firsthand what kind of firewood it makes.
That sure has some straight grain to it. I wish elm would split that easy too. I have access to quite a bit of it around here and cannot pass it up.
That wood is not very good drys to like paper and it seems to smolder rather than burn real well Kinda like sumac it does split easy the quick burner I like is sassafras JB
Oh trust me there's MANY more SS woods id rather take but in my case hoarders cant be choosey. Problem with sass is i wanna mill it now. Worth a LOT more as boards than firewood.
I have a boat load of TOH that Im going to kill the root structure than drop. Not sure how much I'll process. I have/ will burn it, but it seems to clog my CAT. You get exercise not just from processing TOH, but also from all the times getting up to reload the stove with it
Bundles have 6-7 splits. If the current rotation of dry wood has lots of primo btu wood thats heavy (sugar maple, black birch, oak) ill put 2-3 splits of SS wood. I dont grab at random and try to have an even mix. I have some cottonwood that was in the mix. Ill be sure only one split goes into them. If i had a choice of only one species for bundles it would be red maple. Dries in a year or less. Not heavy when dry either. Most common hardwood in Connecticut, but its pot luck where and when i score it.
That looks like Holly-wood! You know, the stuff the leading man spits in the movies? All my firewood is crooked so this is just a dream.
I cant stand them smell of TOH that being said in my expierence it burns decent id put it close to cherry.
Burns pretty good for me. I have a suspicion, just a suspicion that the layer under the bark attracts and holds water very well. Just like tulip poplar. Someday I’ll try splitting the bark off. See what happens. It’s a heavier wood than I would have imagined. A log tote full is rather heavy. Not crazy heavy but more than I expected.
only use for TOH I’ve ever stumbled upon in writing is the Chinese used it a lot for cooking fires. Makes sense, fast burning, no coals. Heat up the Wok for a quick meal and move on
I have not milled any yet but I would not rule it out some of the logs customers bring to be milled can be entertaining "Can you cut me 1x10 boards and the log only measured 9 inches rotten ant infested ,and crooked so a ailanthus covered with lanternfly poop could be a possibility would be crappy boardsJB
