I am new here but I wondered if many of you are Battery heads? Some of ya'll may laugh and scoff but I got tired of having to (Stihl and Husqy) fight modern gas, high altitude and messed up idling as well as having "she who must be obeyed" ordering me to undress outside after cutting wood so on a whim, having all ryobi battery tools bought a new 14" Ryobi 40V chainsaw and put a 18" bar on it and have now been using it for 3 years and cut bone hard dead down dried in the New Mexico desert oak. Takes 2 charged batteries to fill my 6 ft tundra box to the top which is enuf cutting for this 68 yr old. I was AMAZED. I have neighbors with more "respectable" LOL, 40 V saws like milwaukee/Eco etc etc and mine cuts circles around them as they throw chains all the time while I just keep cutting. LOVE it. Never going back to to gas and noise again! I expect it will wear out soon so I bought another in case I get it jammed but it keeps cutting! Anyone else using batteries?

How does a battery saw help with that? It's the bar oil and tree sap you get all over you when cutting. Not the engine exhaust.

I can certainly see advantages using a modern battery saw vs a 35-40cc gas machine. But once we get up to a Stihl MS250 and beyond, gas still is just so much more powerful/productive vs battery.

Plus, swinging a battery powered saw around on Oct 31st just doesn't have the desired effect, ya know? :saw::picard:

Ummm gas saws stink. No debating that. Ha! I missed the humour in the OCT 31 thang lol, but it does allow you to sneek up on them!
"More Powerful" hmmm ever tried a good battery saw? I don't need more power I just need wood and time. And anyway did not want to start a argument about Elec vs Gas just wanted to talk about Battery Saws and others experience. Laugh in the shadows ok lol!

I'm pretty sure it wasn't what Stihl was going for when they developed M-Tronic, but my 261 fires first pull reliably, even if you only run it for 15 seconds and shut back down. NONE of my traditional saws will do that. It's my first pick for haunted house duties. I've gotten within' a couple feet of unsuspecting (but willing) "victims" and pretty sure I've clocked a few at under 2 seconds 0 - 60 when the saw fires. :hair::rofl:

I LOVE the smell of 2-cycle power equipment. I do however acknowledge that it may be unpleasant to some. It is parfume to me much the way an old carbureted V8's exhaust when warming up, is.

Well now that the Motor Heads have Highjacked my thread about Battery powered saws I guess we can acknowledge that some guys LOVE the smell of fossil fuel fumes. I used to like the smell of Gasoline in all forms as a kid until the brain damage took me to another realm and I started to like the smell of other things and sometimes enjoying the taste! I also like smell other things burning but never inhaling.
Anyone out there use B A T T E R Y Powered Saws? Once you go 40 Volt you never go back.

I just ordered a Husqvarna top handle battery powered saw. Not sure if the voltage but it might be 40 volt. Not due in till 2nd week of February.:(

Great thread. Ive thought of getting a Dewalt 20v one as i have several of their batteries and other tools including a pole saw that works great for such work. That ive owned for 2-3 years.

I know campinspecter has a couple battery saws including a new pro model Stihl that was very impressive in the video he posted.

Once age catches up with me i may slowly convert to them

These tests are interesting. I could see the appeal for occasional use for the average Joe home owner type.

This is impressive for a coal powered saw.
I believe the top handle version is gaining a following with arborist.

If stank is your only hangup with gas saws, we do have a resident oil expert that can resolve that for you. M-tronic and Autotune will take care of the rest. Outside of climbing saws, the market isn’t betting on them…

However Donny Walker is an amateur chef, Motul smells great to him and me. I can carry 2 gallons of gas with me, how many batteries that is, I have no clue. But a 60-70cc saw will cut a metric or regular ton of wood for $6…

My buddy bought a kobalt 80 volt? saw. Sold his 435 Husqvarna gas saw. Sold all gas equipment for battery powered ope. Ryobi, DeWalt and that Kobalt saw. He doesn't use it. Heavy and slow. I cut everything he needs cut now. He's went back to a gas snowblower, this year, from two battery units and bought an echo gas leaf blower because the battery units don't cut it. Battery has its place. I'm going to buy a Stihl home owner grade battery string trimmer in fact. I don't do enough trimming to need a gas unit and I get bo joy from running one anyway. Unless its on my test stand.

This made me laugh! I totally understand that, except it's me that can't stand reeking of the exhaust.

More to your point, I bought an Echo battery saw about 2 months ago. I really like it and enjoy using it. I am impressed with it so far, and it has it's place.... limbing, working 'small' trees, cutting limbs and saplings off the fences, quick cut sessions etc.

But, it won't replace my 460.....

I could easily use a light battery saw to do what my 2511P does but I already have the 2511 and love it.

I own one. Only complaint is the motor burnt out...twice in only a few uses. HD replaced them both. If the third dies not sure what ill do.
You should get a battery saw to do what your 241 does! Just a thought!

I understand, makes sense. Not everyone's going to want/need/have a use for/see the value in a battery saw. If a person wants a saw thats quieter than a gas saw, no exhaust, doesn't want to mix gas (wonder if they have any mixed etc)...a battery saw may work well for them, depending on what they're cutting-size and to a degree maybe species... i can throw the echo in the cab of a vehicle and not worry about the gas. Bar oil may end up leaking a bit, but that's not like gas getting in the cab.

I'm not one of those EV/Battery nuts. I never really thought I'd have a battery saw, especially that I'd be impressed by one. Now I've got one and I'm impressed. But like I said, it has it's place and purpose, and it won't replace my 460.
