I'm probably snipe hunting, and think the answer is no. Is there a synthetic line out there that can double as a static rig line and also as a recovery/winch line? My plan is to buy a 100ft of dyneema and 200ft of sterling and cover both bases. would be nice if I could just buy one and not need to carry extra? The static line is just a prepper idea, the winch line is a want/need. I don't plan on installing the winch line onto a winch, it will only be an extension line, so it will always be "loose" Dyneema I know isn't the right material for rigging but I just keep thinking it could be made to work in a pinch. wishful thinking? to give an idea on diameter , the dyneema is 3/8 and the sterling is 10mm. the 10mm sterling I'm looking at might do ok with a snatch block but would still be pushing the limit if not over; depending on how stuck one might be.
If you could explain what you're going to use them for, someone might be able to help a little better. All I'm getting from your description is.... you're just going to buy them and throw em on the garage floor. If that's the case, it doesn't really matter what you buy. Your comment about using a synthetic winch line for rigging..... you could use steel cable for rigging or said sterling rope for clothes line. May not be the best/easiest but could be done in a pinch.
I thought it was self explanatory, the winch line for vehicle recovery and a static line for rigging. Trees, ppl, equipment or whatever. I don't know if people use the word "rigging" for vehicle recovery but that isn't the intention. Don't take this the wrong way, - if I wanted to use steel cable I would. It does matter what I'm going to buy regardless if it sits on a floor or not. Because when it's needed, it's needed and there and isn't going to kill anyone. I think I have enough paracord for clothes lines anyway
My point was, i don't see why you couldn't use a synthetic winch line for a rigging line. I was just using examples to do it instead of telling you what to do. How much rigging do you plan or forsee yourself doing? How often do you "recover" vehicles? How heavy are said vehicles and how stuck are they normally? This all plays into how much you load up a "rigging" rope vs winch cable. Don't take this the wrong way; If you have the money for both why even post the topic? It's best to have one specifically for each task but I'm sure you already know that. So again..... what's the point of this thread then? It sounds like you already know the answer to the only question you asked?
I'll put it a little different way. I have a 5/8 Sampson rope that I'll use for pulling trees over and rigging limbs/stem wood outta trees. In no way shape or form am i going to use it for the recovery of a vehicle or stuck equipment.
