Mike, I agree that would be cool. I think the most cost effective way to do that would be for Randy to get a dyno, then all could be done at the same place as the saw arrived and when completed.

However, that would result in less time to make a living because he would be spending more time testing. Additionally all the customers would have to wait longer.

One additional thought about 'control samples' while I am sure that Chad built the most accurate dyno that time and money would allow, we only have numbers from a single dyno, so we do not know for sure that the numbers are reflective of the actual performance of the saw. If we take the numbers just as numbers, and not hang names on them like torque or HP, they are still an indicator of the performance differences.

Hovever, using say two different dynos and comparing results, would lead to the old addage 'man with one watch always knows what time it is, man with two never knows'!

I watched a ported 461 vs ported 660 in about a 20" wood on youtube. The 660 beat it by a fraction of a second. In that size wood why would u wanna hold the weight up? In bigger wood no doubt id pick the 660 up in a minute. Tons of torque!!

The 660 keeps my arms big. I need that to keep away the boys from my daughters!

You're a good guy Chad, glad to see the dyno is working out for you and that others are able to benefit from it as well.
I wouldn't have believed the increase from stock to dp muffler cover, that is crazy!

You're welcome Dexter and Squarefile. That's a lot of HP for an ole country boy cutting firewood. Wish my Dad, and Grandpaws, could have ran it. Both my Grandpaws were Loggers and used Homelites. I still remember my Dad's Homelite-his Dad's. It had a manual oil pump he would pump with his thumb for oiling the chain. Wish I had it.

All I remember it was a light blue color and a thumb chain oil pump by the left handle. I'm sure that helps a lot! Maybe I could find an example on the internet.

Dexter, Randy and Chad deserve all the thanks. I was just the lucky guy that had a ported 660 at the time. I'm sure that 660 will last me a lifetime. I probably don't use a saw more in a year than most of the logging professionals use in a week. That was the original reason I bought a pro model saw was dependability.

Randy, I'm pretty sure this is the model. Looks like it's a Super XL model with the thumb oiler. We never went a winter without wood for the fireplace. It was a dependable saw.

They are not at all hard to find. Very popular and good runners too. I think my grandfather has one just like that as well. I'm hoping it winds up here. I'd like both of my grandfathers saws to keep and remember them by for decades to come.

Actually this makes me wonder. If you compare it to the 461 dyno runs the stock 461 is right on as far as HP. Advertised is 6 and the dyno was 5.99-?

So why is the stock 660 so different? Would be interesting to know what the compression/age/history of the stock 660 was. Or was it the same saw? Before and after porting?

It was not the same saw. It was Chad's 660 that was the stock saw, and the muffler modded saw.

Stihl rates the 660 at a HP rating that I believe applied more to the older saws......they have continued to make the 660 weaker, but have not lowered the HP rating.
