I think Hickory or white oak was common for wheels and hubs

Elm was used commonly for wagon wheel hubs from what I've read...

I had one run in with a gum tree. It was along a driveway and needed to be removed. After shredding a couple 12" rounds we decided to let it sit. Around the 9 month mark it split apart great, but was starting to get punky. Why couldn't it have been the emerald gum borer?

Every so often some gum gets mixed in with the hardwood stacks and when I find it I set it aside for re-lights. All the stringies (is that even a word?) are perfect for lighting fast on a bed of coals.

    The best is hophornbeam, ironwood.

Elm for wagon wheels, at least the hubs.
