01 January is last day here in upstate SC…Had 14 does in back yard and pasture this morning and 5 different bucks day before. Everything from 2 pronghorn to a nice 7 point, 4 point and one with 6 but misformed rack. Trying to get the oldest grandson one more this year. Told him he may have to hunt right from our back deck
I'm hoping he makes the mistake of showing up in daylight. If not I'll settle for a doe or button buck. Meat is only getting more expensive.
Sat yesterday afternoon hoping to kill another doe before winter bow starts and had a group come in around 4:30. Just as i started to draw on one of the bigger does the whole group got run off by a pesky half rack 8 that was hanging around before they came in. He chased them all over the woods for a good 10mins before they finally disappeared. Guess the post rut is kicking here in south jersey .
I’d to Id definitely be shooting him if given the opportunity! Our season ends tomorrow here in Michigan for the most part, so we’re all but done where I’m at.
Forgot to pop back in here (I think). Long story short, beat up body parts, and about 10 hunts until I finally rattled a smaller buck in. The new neighbors dogs are absolute tramps, and I figure they've been running/spooking the deer around here. Other neighbor witnessed it as well. Other factors as well, but it's much worse than I originally thought. Anyways, a little bit of exercise and a little bit of deer in the freezer.
Thanks! I'm really impressed with the quality of the meat. I usually like to age venison, and I think it really helps the tenderness, but this guy was good to go after 2 days, tender as can be.
saskwoodburner , nice harvest and with the dogs, there is no greater lover of them but carry a handi-rifle, I have pics of them in packs of 7-8, wish I could shoot the owners who care so little about them because it’s not the dog’s fault…just silently do what needs done, I have several without collars, hate to take a child’s pet but again, this is being responsible as a parent…just so sad-We have a primitive season left for cap and ball and recurve only but I’m done. We’re hunting sheds now.
I'm just not that guy, although if someone else did it I wouldn't judge. We're probably going to make a formal complaint to the rural municipality so there's some kind of record, and the other neighbor said he was going to go have a word with the careless dog owners. I'd prefer to live trap and deliver to the local shelter/animal control. We have no kill shelters here, so the dogs would be unharmed, and either eventually go to a home where they are tended to, or the owners will get sick of paying the reclaimation fee whatever that may be. The family (a few of the same last name in the area) is known for being a little "off", so in the future I wouldn't want any of my pets in danger due to a guy with a grudge.
I'm in agreement with you. Unless a dog is about to harm me or my family or friends, I won't go there. That said, we had to take out someone's Springer spaniel that was foaming at the mouth chasing after my friends and I one early Fall day about 30 years ago on my hunting land. Dog had a collar too. I have a soft spot for all dogs, and springers are one of my favorites. But this dog was moments away from biting us, and clearly had rabies.
Already shedding huh? I just saw one of the monster bucks here in my yard yesterday, and both antlers still attached. Also saw a small 6 point chasing a doe a week ago. Both horns still on all of them.
Still carrying their racks here. Had a decent buck at 40 yds Monday evening, next to last day of muzzy season but I couldn't shot another buck.
