My parents purchased a gm60 and are having a difficult time getting heat out if it, hard time starting it and not getting overnight burn times.

I have a quadrafire pioneer 2 at my house I’ve been using for two years and it 10 times the wood burner as the hearthstone. The blower on the gm60 is a joke. I think it’s rated for 120 cfm, I can blow out birthday candles harder then that fan can blow.

Anyone else disappointed with harthstone gm60? The dealer they bought it at does sell pacific energy and blaze king, and thinking about getting a Pacific energy summer or super. No maintenance on a cat and north south loading.

There is definitely something wrong with stove, installation, chimney or fuel.

By your comment about maintenance on the cat, which likely has nothing to do with their problem, it makes me wonder... Do they even understand how to operate the stove? Are they bypassing the cat when reloading or starting a cold stove?

As for maintenance of the cat, I remove the cat 2 times per burn season and dust the fly ash off. It takes 2-3 minutes to do and is so easy that a child can do it. Is that a big problem?

I am not a fan of Hearthstone but still I suggest getting hold of the dealer or corporate to see how to fix the problem.

Hearthstones are known to be picky breathers. Make sure the flue meets requirements.

As mentioned, Cat equipped stove maintenance is a non-issue. Cat stove operation is simply.... Simple!

May be worth Googling this make/model for more info on successful operation procedure.

The dealer is coming out and installing an outdoor air kit, but even with a window right next to the stove cracked it didn’t make a noticeable difference on starting. They are also adding 2’ of chimney to see if that helps the draft.

They aren’t exactly new to burning wood, just new to epa stoves and cat stoves. And they are not opening the bypass too soon, they do read the thermometer on the side about when to engage the cat.

Two times per season to clean the cat is two more times the non cat guys have to clean theirs.

There are plusses and minuses to every type of stove. I will say though I am amazed at how much less wood we burn and keep the house much, much warmer. I think it is worth the 4-6 minutes every year.

Also, I hope you meant closing the bypass rather than opening it! Close to engage the cat. Open when putting in more wood.

What's the moisture content of the wood they're burning? Cat stoves really love dry seasoned wood. If the wood is too moist (20% plus) I bet it will struggle. I know my hybrid Ideal Steel does. It's great with well seasoned wood, if it's not seasoned to where it needs to be, the heat output is very noticeable.

I’m sure that is a contributing factor.

No point in throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I get overnight burns when I fill it at night and choke back the air to 1/4 open or idle. I think the burn times that are advertised from most manufacturers are over inflated because what are they defining as burn time or heat time.

I dont like how the glass turns black when choking it back overnight and it’s usually warm enough in the room come morning not to need to crank up the stove. But that does help clear up the glass.

How does your wood compare to theirs, and (if better) have you tried some of yours in their stove?

A9D01C41-3917-47FB-AD02-ED6CD55DFCE4.jpeg As mentioned in other thread, my GM60 is a rockin’ unit cranking out tons of heat and no problems with 930pm-630am burn times. Lighting from cold has been no problem either. Far northern climate too so temps as cold as it gets outside… I don’t have outdoor air kit and ha e straight up chimney of about 16’

my tips, take them or leave them:
    1. Use DRY wood. Mine is 13% or less
    2. Open bypass, air control and leave door cracked open when lighting kindling (I do top down burn)
    3. Close door latch when kindling blazing
    4. When temp gauge is in catalytic zone, close bypass, reduce air intake and let it go
    5. When wood is burned low, and temps approaching lower end of catalytic zone, bypass catalytic, open air control, and reload stove (I move coals to front and make a channel in coals near air inlet at bottom front)
    6. Leave air control open fully and catalytic bypassed for a few minutes until fire is blazing and wood is all charred then close bypass and reduce air intake again
Using this method, I get 8–10 hour burns on full stove and room temps in upper 70s in 1000 sq ft single floor space.

hope your parents get it figured out as I’m really happy with my GM60.

Thanks! Works well in this stove as N/S full logs are too long so this allows good airflow in the top down burn.

The place my parents bought the stove from is coming tomorrow to install a fresh air kit and do a burn from cold on.
Anyone got opinions on the pacific energy stoves? Non cat stove with north south loading looks appealing, I wonder how strong the blower fan blows. The blower on the green mountain is weaker then a mouse fart.

For what it's worth, you don't need a raging fan to get heat off the stove. Convection works just fine with a free standing unit. On an insert maybe a blower is needed but doesn't have to be like a box fan on high.

I used to run a fan on my freestanding stove but then i learned from guys around here that it wasn't needed. The heat in the room acts differently with no fan but total heat output is very similar. Needless to say... i used to use a box fan on my stove. Now i just put the overhead fan in the room on reverse and load the stove.

Is this an insert stove? Those need a fan...even a heavily shielded free standing stove will benefit from a fan...

    It’s a free standing stove
