Not bad for around here. Could’ve used more than a 20” bar on the 462 but dang it’s fun tearin up stuff with that bar
It is fun cutting with a 20" on a higher CC saw. Ill have to let you try the 500i with it when i come over. Hopefully soon.
A lot of the dead standing chestnut oaks I'm getting have very soft sap wood but the heartwood is solid as can be. Ends up making a helluva mess but it's still prime btu's in there.
For sure. Some of the white and red oak down the road has enough punky sap wood I’m leaving it there. I’m just finishing up 15 cords of oak that’s on the too old side. More in the forest to come. I’ll leave some on the road for any other scroungers to get. Bigger logs are fine. If you have 12” branch wood with 2” of rotten sap each side I’m not crazy about grabbing it. Single wedge splitter you can shave some off. The box wedge doesn’t do that as easily. I did split some white oak rounds into a pile because I thought they were so bad I’d just burn them. Went through the pile and ran them through the box a second time to shave off the punk. The heart wood on the red deteriorates faster. The whites do tend to stay better but the sap wood rots fast. I’ve got a hell of a mess out there in the processing area ok by me, I use the plow on the atv to spread and flatten it in low spots (mud)
