The first 2 pics make me think maple but that last one has me confused as I have not seen maple with bark like that around here.

My vote would be that it is maple. And the bark looks mapleish to me.

I'd agree. Unless the log was dragged out with a skidder. The ridges look worn down.

It came from a residential tree job.tree service had it cut into rounds and stacked.i doubt it got drug around much. I am now wondering if it's a big Japanese maple.

Reminds me a lot of Tree of Heaven but the bark isn't quite right. I've seen variation in the bark before though. Does it happen to smell like rancid peanut butter by any chance?

The bark is a dead ringer for Japanese Maple, but the wood should have a heavy solid feel to it, unless it’s been dead a while.

It was very green. I'm sure alive when cut.

That bark does look like the Japanese Red Maple I have in my backyard.

I thought the same. The split texture reminds me of Norway maple.

There’s enough of it around CT, but normally not that big. I’ve only seen a couple that could’ve produced a round as large as the OP’s. Never paid them too much attention as overplanted as they are.

The one laying on the splitter may be tree of heaven. The one you’re holding next to it,,,,not sure. Never saw TOH look like that.
