Out driving around with my 8 year old I came across a fallen ash that came down in the windstorm a week and a half ago. Meat still good with only a couple areas starting to get mealy. The town had hastily cut some sections and moved them to the side just enough to clear the road. I didn’t have a saw with me but I was able to get something of a small score. Not much good ash left around my immediate area so I’ll take it. Still plenty of trunk left but it’s along a route I seldom travel.
Not far, maybe 15 minutes from home. I’m definitely debating it. The only thing that has me on the fence is one of my coworkers has several dead ash he’s taking down right now, averaging 24” DBH. He’s been practically begging me to let him drop off a couple truckloads of rounds right in my backyard It kind of doesn’t make much sense to go scrounging ash with a deal like that.
Wow! Great score! I hear you on Ash. Not much left in CT unfortunately. The stuff still there may be worth grabbing. Ash isn’t picky about being 100% dry. ; )
Nice and easy to process. Because I had to deal with whatever lengths they were precut to, there’s variation ranging from 13-17” overall split length. I won’t complain though. This may end up going to my brother-in-law come March or so. I usually bring him 3-4 Colorado loads of wood per winter.
Somehow missed this. Awesome find Eric. I love finding scores in areas i dont often travel. Will you back that way to get the rest?
It’s still on my radar and weighing on my brain a bit. Maybe tomorrow morning at some point. Ash is not my favorite, but I won’t turn down an easy score of it.
X3. Even if you don't process it right away, if you have it handy for later, thats less you'll have to chase later. Besides, splitting and stacking can be a good stress relief.
All the rounds I cut on site are quartered. The rounds on the right were precut at weird lengths that’ll produce one 16” round and a shorty. I’ll finish that up later. I got this just in time. Another year and it would’ve been too punky for my liking. What’s left there I’m not too crazy about. IME the bottom third and top of a dead ash gets soft fast. All the primo is in the middle.
It’ll do It’s the best of what I’ve come across around here in a while anyway. I was out hiking today in a state forest not far from where I got this. Found quite a few decent dead ash that still looked superb. Of course, state land and no easy access even if I had a permit.
Throttle therapy is the best kind! getting some ash is even better therapy! Way to get after it Eric. Hows the meat on it? Looks pretty solid. EDIT: i see you too the solid stuff. Same experience here with ash...top & bottom punk first.
Yeah I walked away leaving quite a bit behind. The further down the trunk I got, the softer it got towards the sapwood. There’s still a couple decent rounds there but it’s up where the trunk “Y’s” and has a massive crack down it. Not really a priority at this point. My mind keeps drifting back to the upcoming Dollar General barkless BL bonanza
