Seems like the real facts come out when a stove is actually put into service.. That tells all, EPA numbers verses wood burned and what the room temps are reading...

I can tell you without a doubt that the manufactures do some "throttling" on the stoves to meet requirements. When I first fired up the NZ3000, I could not, for the LIFE of me get that thing to burn right.....it seemed like someone was choking it to death, even with the draft wide open. After a close inspection, I found a restrictor plate in the air intake box that was, without a doubt, put in there by Napoleon to help it meet guidelines. A modification fixed that and the stove burns amazingly well now.....with good, easy control too.

That's interesting you mention modifying your stove intake.. I was just fooling with my Progress Hybrid,, that has a small air hole in the front of the stove that feeds air into the stove even with the draft 100% closed... My thinking was dropping I simple bolt in the hole , which I did to create more of a cat burn.. Well it seemed to work, causing less secondary burning , but.... I got thinking if we ever burned and the stove bolt was found just sitting in the hole... we'd be screwed on any homeowners insurance.. So out came the bolt and leaving things as per designed... Hate to not get a dime because of a 25 cent bolt...

I may be wrong, I'm pretty good at that, but....I think the low BTU numbers are a function of long burn times. The BTU numbers are a calculation of how much wood burned over time, so the longer the burn, the lower the BTU/hr number.

Charlie, did your experiment with closing the hole result in a longer burn time or did you stop the experiment too soon to make a determination?

I didn't do it long enough , but it looked like it might.. What I ran into with the air hole plugged,,, was those explosive secondaries, one every minute or so,, so it looked like I would have to fool with the draft itself and didn't want to fill it with wood and having it burn over night with those explosive blooms of secondary fire.. I really think the stove needs that air whole.. one thing I did notice is the glass was starting to darken up with the hole plugged.. I would think the stove would get longer burn times with the hole closed.. I hate to fool with something that was already designed with the air hole in mind.. Sometime I'll put the bolt in again and load it pretty full and see what happens... Just have to figure out a good draft setting.. that has to be done by feel as there are no numbers to go by like the Fireview had.. Right now I close the draft or just open a hair... If I do that with the bolt in the hole I get those explosive blooms, so it's starving for air ...Burns good right from the factory .. I'll let you know if I do anymore testing with the hole covered... Did you ever cover yours Dave?

Thanks for keeping us informed, but be careful and do it during the day if you ever try it again.....No, I have not done any experimenting with mine. I am too new at this game, and have enough trouble just doing what the manufacturer suggests. I'll leave the experimenting for you pros to do. :)

Well I also wonder with air always coming in through that front casting, is that some how staying cooled in a sense that if you plug that hole, is that whole front casting now going to build heat? In other words I don't want to ruin something. I think I'll leave well enough alone and enjoy the stove...

I doubt you have to worry about any "cooling" being done from that hole! The stove rages at a zillion degrees where that hole is, it ain't doing any "cooling"! ;) But I do think it would choke the fire, and not let enough oxygen into the stove if it was plugged, which is why you saw the "puffs" with it plugged.

Since getting my stove updated (got rid of a leak/smoke smell), I'm noticing much better control with the PH, longer and slower burns. I used to burn very hot even when the air was closed completely off, or almost completely off. I can now run the stove almost "cold", by cold I mean it's not raging heat coming off it at the low air setting, just nice warm heat. But I can crank it up in a matter of seconds with the turn of the handle. LOVING the control now!

To each his own I guess! I don't like the new name, it's hard to say.

Wasn't there talk of the stove having an option of installed weight cells for calculating the amount of fuel loaded and left in the stove?
