Heavy frost at moose camp, both nights we were there. G kids had a blast. Quiet, (well , when they were sleeping ) LOL Great weather & great view of Mckinley from the river. Picture don't do the view justice, gotta be there to feel it Rare weather day to have such a view this far away
Looks nice. I gotta get up there someday. My wife and I had our honeymoon planned for Alaska (22 years ago), but we had to cancel it at the last minute because we both got job offers that wouldn't wait. How far away is McKinley in that picture? Did the frost take care of the mosquitos?
Nice Dave. Always enjoy going along with you back ta camp. With frost happening now... will you guys start hunting this week, or have you been already? You had said it was really too warm.
Slowed them down a lot, (probably a 75% reduction), none early morning , but by noon enough thawed out to where we had to use mosquito coils & a little bug dope on the kids clothes. Livable conditions, no constant buzz in your ear We hunt, but not hard yet. More having fun camping with guns now. Cut some fire wood, SIL put up his tree stand, some trail work. SIL says he heard one rattle last night. So the cold has them moving at night. This frost will knock down lots of leaves , help with visibility & get the moose moving around. 50° nights forecast now, with possible rain, not good for moose hunting. But we will go out for a few nights every few days & keep an eye on the sign. All 4 guys plan to be there for the last 7 - 10 day . Colder & the rut is usually starting then.
Looks like a great time being had by all. Maybe an FHC paid trip up there for the next members g2g? Uhhhh, prob not.
Great pics Dave!! Looks like a great time! Kudos to the whole family sleeping in those temps. Camping in frost weather ? Not me lol... I'm a freeze baby..
I always look forward to your moose camp pictures...... Good friends of mine from our deer camp are heading up to Canada in a couple weeks for moose......
Camping "off the grid" don't have to be primitive. I took out a propane stove, big bottle, a 10 x20' portable garage for a cooking/dry storage area. Some tables , coolers etc to make it somewhat comfortable. We cut firewood last year, good & dry & burns great this year. ( Yep, even camp firewood should be seasoned ) LOL :firepit:
Back some years ago (ok, ok... 10+) I did a fair amount of winter camping. Go out in the Jeep, find a spot and camp for no real reason other than just because. Some nights just lay on my back and watch the nothern lights for hours. I remember one morning having to chisel my boots off the floor of the tent and having a heck of a time putting them on. Was -15* outside. I have an older Vietnam era mil surplus cold weather bag and it hasn't failed to keep me warm. The getting out into the cold, not so fun. Also now I have a propane heater. And a cot and a mattress and... you know who am I kidding... the whole tent camping thing... hmm, my bed at home looks darn nice!
Yea I have the cot, good bag & warm gear. Still nice to lay in the warm bag & wait out the other guys to see who gets up & gets the fire going & puts on coffee. :firepit: When it's the family, they all seem to be able to wait me out , + I gotta go pee real bad LOL
