The 011 I have came with a 16" bar and a really safe safety chain lol. It's a bummer its so lack luster. This opinion was formed before having porter saws. I'll play with it some more eventually.

Brad can have it. I'm leaving the 011 stock. More of a garage art piece because it's not very fun to run.

Maybe this calls for an experiment. Ill find a good used one, run it stock for a bit and then have the modification done.

I had one lined up, but the pull rope spring (?) broke when the guy went to start it and it wouldnt retract.
    Didnt buy it. Still looking

That video was painful to watch. The muffler modded one was MUCH better. I have an 025/250 in a box, with a burned up cylinder. I got it for free and kept it around as a fix-it-up-port-it project. Just have to get around to it.

Price point is just that, a point. Not sure I'd call the ms250 a bargain unless it was cheap/free and I wanted to spend a whole day just to cut a cord of wood, and it was temporary. I guess it depends on what your point of view is. If you don't have a saw, any saw is better than what you have. I have a few saws, and I like em fast because I like to do more with my time than just cut wood and breathe 2 stroke exhaust.

Does the ms250 cut wood? Sure. Does it do it fast and efficiently? Not really, but it beats a hand saw most of the time. I love being out in the woods, but I don't want to be stuck there all day cutting the same wood I could cut in an hour or less with a different saw. Just my $.02

Not sure what modded saw you are referring to. People trade time for money all the time. It’s life. If getting the job done the fastest was the most important, why not burn oil and sip a beer? Moneys no object right? Why bother with wood at all? Because it’s a money saving endeavor. Just like getting this saw over a 500i for $1,400. I agree there are faster saws. I have a 5100, a 460, and a 7900 that will easily out-cut this saw. They also cost a lot more and are a lot heavier. With all due respect, have you actually ever run a 250/025?

Let’s be realistic yeah we all have fast saws but a 250 does well for what it is. I know several people that heat their houses with wood cut by a 250. If you keep the logs to 10” or less in diameter for most of the time it does fine.

This is the muffler modded one. ^ I probably have run a 250, but I don't remember it. I didn't intend to sound snobby.

The wording of the thread title is weird. "Bargain chainsaw"? It makes it sound like something cheap. Are you talking about saws for joe schmo or experienced wood cutters? If talking about experienced wood cutters, then sure, the 250 might be a bargain if it does what you want at the price you like.

If you are talking about joe schmo, I have run $100 poulans that cut faster than the saw in post #1, so I wouldn't really call it a bargain unless it was comparable in price. Call it apples to oranges, but I have seen poulans last years and stihls destroyed in minutes in a homeowner's hands, and we all know a lot of homeowners treat saws like throwaway tupperware. They don't first thing about a chainsaw, but they saw one in a commercial or on tv or in a movie or their uncle had one... If a person is looking for a "bargain saw", I would suggest the local classified adds. If a person wants a durable saw and is willing to do the maintenance on it, now we are talking about stihl, husqvarna (not huskavarna), dolmar, echo, etc... Anything more than a "throwaway" saw is no bargain if/when it breaks/burns up because it costs as much as a new one to fix and that just made it a throwaway saw.

I have a pile of blown up saws that were a "bargain" according to the previous owners, at least until they blew them up. Then they became very expensive paper weights. I'm talking everything from poulans to the stihl 660. I have a pile spanning the entire range. People give them to me as payment and think they are doing me a favor. my favorite is the poulans....cough cough. They usually say something like "here, you work on saws, you can have this and fix it to use. I bought it to clean up some branches but it quit on the third tank and I have no idea what's wrong with it so I bought a (stihl, husqvarna, etc...) and it didn't run right, so I gave it to my brother in law"

It's usually pretty close to that, if not the exact line. Like I said, I don't mean to sound snobby or anything, I just have a hard time wrapping my head around people, especially when the word "bargain" is used. I'm not trying to poo-poo the 250, I have one in a box. If a guy looks at a few garage sales, he can usually find a bigger and more productive saw for a lot less. My wife found me a husqvarna 55 in a case, with chains and files for $5 at a sale a few years ago. I guess that would fit the "bargain" title pretty well....

Maybe I'm off on a tangent or something after a long day.... I didn't mean to offend anyone.

Yes a poulan is a bargain saw and maybe the 42cc poulan would run close with an 025-250. But a green poulan isn’t in the same league quality wise and while some may last awhile because the home owner takes care of it this same person will get far more life out of the 250 on average.

No worries. I think you missed the point of the video. You're looking at it through the lense of a guy who fixes old saws. A small percentage of the population overall. It's about new saws. $5 garage sale saws that don't run isn't going to help the majority of people. Not everyone wants a bigger, heavier saw.
