My advice to you is to get that snow moved back and out of the way before the lower temps hit you....as you already know. Hope your power didn't go out.

The plowing I did the other day during the warm temps (same storm) is going to be set for the winter. Colder temps came that very overnight and now those banks will not budge!

 

35/70 and burning a red maple/beech mix. Woke up around 0400 just in time to hear the power go out. Just sat in the recliner watching the flames in the wood stove for a while, dozing off and on until 0600. We had heavy wet snow (I mean heavyyyyy) for around 24 hours with a total somewhere around 14-16 inches (didn't bother to measure) so I fired up the tractor and got to work. Kept a watchful eye on the trees as a lot of the birch were bent over blocking the road and you could hear branches breaking and trees coming down every once in a while. Got the main areas cleared and since the power came back on just before 0900, I'm taking a break for some coffee before I start cleaning off the deck. I don't have to technically shovel the wrap-around deck, as when I had it rebuilt, I had pins installed on three sections of rails so I can remove those during the winter and just use a sleigh shovel to push the snow off. It's a raised deck (up around 9') so there is plenty of room for the snow to pile up. Learned the first few years I had this home that I'm too old and busted up to shovel such a large deck (especially when the snow can be three feet deep). So much easier to just push it off.

And as yooperdave said, with the temps dropping tomorrow, wherever this snow ends up by the end of the day is probably where it is going to remain until May. Good news is that they are supposed to start grooming the snowmobile trails tomorrow (haven't had enough snow to open yet). Bad news is I have about six cords of rounds/logs buried under all that snow that will now probably have to wait until mid to late spring to be processed. Guess that means I'll have to hook the sled up to the snowmobile and go get more.

That's an awesome combo of species. I have some mulberry drying to be used 24/25 burn season, Lord willing. But have a few chunks I tossed in the other night with BL. Made me realize I need
more mulberry!

Good morning my people! It's 30 outside here and the fire is going with ash and sugar maple. The house is cozy. I haven't been posting much as I've been hunting. Been a tough season for me with a few misses, but last weekend (the last weekend of firearms season here) I was able to harvest two does. With venison in the freezer it felt good to sleep in this morning, get up and build a fire and brew some coffee. I am having a lazy, relaxing morning and wish y'all peace and love!

 

Down to 8°f last night. It's supposed to get up to 41°f with sunny skies winds out of the northeast at 5 to 10 mph. White and red oak cooking.

 

It's been a bit warmer than average for here, but looks like a chilly 5-6 day stretch is coming. Basically sitting in -20 to -25 C (-4 to -13 F) for a few days, and then it drops a bit more. Spent those warmer days bucking, splitting, and loading the shed (life got in the way this year, way behind) and it was great. Cold enough to work a decent pace, and no sweating if you dress light. Pine and more pine in the reactor.

 

5 this morning. Just burning pine cuz its too cold to go outside and get eucalyptus! Gotta go soon though. Almost out of wood inside.

 

26° out now. Another light coat of snow fell overnight. I don't think enough to bother with the snowblower. Burning ash in the quadrafire. I think I'll bring up my honey locust chunks that have been drying like 4 years. We have a cold snap coming...


Looks like our chances of a white Christmas went up.

 

-7c/19f this morning. Its been a milder stretch around here the last little bit. Yesterday was potentially the last 'warm' day before a slide to colder arctic air so my son and I took care of some outdoor chores. I cleaned the chimney and replaced the fire brick in the stove while he loaded the garage with enough wood to keep us going for the next 8-10 days. I was tired last night and went to bed early so I didnt do an overnight burn. The stove is now cold on the positive side I get to bottle wine today!

 

Looks like I better get a lot more wood brought in.

 

We are playing the power goes on the power goes out. As about 10” of heavy snow keeps hitting the lines.. house is 75* and toasty

This mornings temp.
The ambient warmer up FAST at around 2:30-3 pm today. A 15 mph breeze came up and the ambient rose 15° in 30 minutes.fire killed white and black spruce in the stove.

 

So, how's everyone doing. I haven't been on here in a month or so iirc.
Currently -20°F , -25 ish C ambient temperature. East wind gusting to 30 mph. Makes the windchill -45 to -55 F

 

Good here. Glad to see you back. That’s some cold temperatures you have there compared to here!

18F here and I just put some small Ash and Elm splits in and then large White Spruce splits on top of them.
