These drums were packed Jan '19. We cut the bottom out and remove the plugs from the top, allows air to circulate better. Stack them on plastic pallets, 2 rows wide, cover with metal roofing panels. It is the cutoffs, chunks, uglies. Split and fill the drums. We were doing this before we built the bins from pallets. 1st one was built Nov '19. We burn most of this
My wholesaled bundles are plain with no paper insert. They contain .6 cubic feet of wood. 8x8x16" Couple years ago one of my customers calls me in a panic saying a state of Connecticut guy says they need to have them. Turns out the guy was from the state dept of weights and measure??? and was checking the pumps for accurate dispensing of a gallon. I ended up putting papers in his existing bundles and the next order.
Consumer packages (bundled firewood) are required to have a declaration of identity, this is what the product is, in this instance it would be firewood. The package would also need a declaration of responsibility, who packaged it, with an address if made offsite from where it is sold and telephone number to reach the responsible party. This exists because if a product needed to be recalled for being contaminated with broken glass or bacteria or being short weight, etc. Consumer packages are also required to have a declaration of quantity. How much am I getting? Now I can price shop between products and the company can be held accountable for under packing said package. This information is normally found on the principal display panel on the package. Now where the rubber meets the road and what is enforced and where, depends on where you live.
I had her print them up two per standard sheet of paper. Cut them in half and in they went. Had to unwrap several at his store as the guy made him put the bundles behind the store. I did it with a few orders after then stopped. All five of my stores get "blank" wrapped bundles. Suppose i could get some type of stick on ones and use the printer. Dunno if it even works anymore and am rather clueless on how to use it.
I sell a face cord or 1/3 of a cord for $280. My deliveries are about 140 mile round trip which costs me about $25 in diesel. Less in fuel if making multiple deliveries with my 18’ trailer. I wouldn’t sell firewood for less than $15 an hour after all expenses and equipment depreciation. I am a very fit and efficient producer in my humble opinion and don’t understand how others sell firewood for so little. Sure, I enjoy being outside and operating my saws and splitter and hauling and stacking and delivering, but why should a Walmart employee make more per hour without all the equipment and physical risk? Maybe too many sellers are in the charity business which makes it difficult to have a profitable business selling firewood.
This is why those bundles sold retail seem so expensive. They're sold and priced like any other commodity, practically. This is also why so many of us just won't sell any firewood - it's just worth so much more than the loocal market will bear. It's also [one of many reasons] why so many others can't be bothered with firewood.
I'm terrible with my saw and not much better with my maul, the pieces I wind up with are all over the map when it comes to anything that might pass for a split or a stick of wood. Given my day job, I don't want any more complaining or aggravation so I greedily stack my crooked wood piles in my backyard and keep my head down. Same reason I don't buy wood I just scavenge it or get log lengths delivered. More power to you guys who do sell, I don't think I could do it.
