So my daughter and son-in-law live in northern Florida, and usually buy firewood for their outdoor fire pit. My son-in-law told me that this year most all sellers are selling by piece. count. Example one hundred pieces or 200 pieces. They are selling 200 pieces for $165. He understands costs have gone up this year, but has never experienced people selling this way. That is borderline convenience store prices if you ask me. I just sold a cord of wood locally in Arkansas for $180. May be I need to rethink my selling strategy.
New strategy: 1. Move to Florida. 2. Start splitting everything to kindling size. 3. Build another wood shed to stack your piles of cash!
That's about the price that one dude was getting in...where was it...Nashville maybe? I don't recall the user name right now...
Selling wood by the piece is a deceptive practice. Wood should be sold by the cord or fraction of. Sellers are always playing games to get more money in their pocket and short change the consumer.
I've seen wood recently sold by the gallon, go figure. The deal was for a "totally stuffed 55 gallon drum". You could even keep the drum with a deposit and call for a exchange for another stuffed one.
Is there any other definition? In NH it is only legal to sell firewood in cord or fractions of a cord. No ricks, Steve’s, ranks or hanks, bush cord or face cords. Not that people don’t do it tho.
I'm south of you (less wood burners) and I've sold for several years for $240/cord and went up to $280/cord this year and have not had any complaints or people who 'walked' upon learning the price. It's been hard to keep up. And several people in my small town sell wood. I think you should raise your price. I complain about no money in it at $280! Actually am thinking about going higher. Anyone selling by the 'stick' must be selling small quantities, 1/4 cord or less, and to city slickers. FWIW, about 95% of my sales are 1/2 cord or 1 cord.
I'm not a seller, just a firewood hack. I do occasionally get on Craigslist and look at firewood prices. I burn 1-2 cords per year and currently have a stockpile of about 11 cords. I was curious about possibly selling some. Over the Summer i sold 200 splits for $99 It was roughly a liberal 1/4 cord which i stated in my CL posting. I usually gave them 110 pieces. Think i had 4-5 sales. It was older inventory that was too weathered. $180 per cord would be cheap around here. Selling by the piece a good strategy IMO. You could always morve to Florida and do the same. Does palm process easily? Good burning?
So roughly a face cord? Doing a quick count myself that's what I was coming up with. I have no intentions of relocating especially just to sell fire wood, but if I had the ability to haul a tractor trailer load down there I might very well do it.
My split count is 750-800 pcs per cord so i go by that. 16" long splits. I mostly sell by half cord and its the max i can deliver per trip.
Same here, also has to be "ranked and well stowed" when calculating the volume, not loose or piled. Here are some excerpts: (b) Cord. The cord is the standard measure for bulk firewood, and shall contain 128 cubic feet of wood, ranked and well stowed. (f) Other Terms. The use of the terms “face cord”, “rack”, “rick”, “tier”, “pile” or “truck-load”, or any other term describing a unit of measure different than those specified in this article shall be prohibited. (g) Ranked and Well-Stowed. Wood placed in a row or rows, with individual pieces touching and parallel to each other and stacked in a compact manner minimizing spaces between pieces. Not that it stops people from selling "face cords", pickup truck loads and other made up sizes. Brad
