I'm curious if others are using more firewood this season compared to last. I'm 1.5 cords used in a 3,000 square foot shop. Much colder in Wyoming this season than last.
Maybe 1/3rd cord so far................been mild, save for a few cold snaps..................I keep my dump around 65* though, or the dogs hate me.
I burning much more this year. Last year was mild in the fall. I was able to trap beaver in open water up to now. This year the creeks are frozen over and the shelf ice is bad.
Camber, we've already had several negative degree nights. This time last year, I was only starting fires at night or one in the morning until it died out. Most days have been mid 30s to 20s lately. I'd say the biggest difference has been the overcast days. If it's 35 and sunny, it's much easier to heat.
I’m guessing a little more than a face cord so far. I’m burning more often than I usually do, despite the relatively warm weather. The idea is to not buy heating oil again until the spring/summer.
Winter is settling in now but didn't even start the stove until November. Normal would be middle of October. Maybe a 1/4-1/3 cord so far.
Always easier to heat on overcast days. It was a few degrees below zero this morning then the clouds came up. Warmed way way up to 32 and suppose to stay for a few days. We are looking at up to a foot of snow, but I'll take that all day if it stays a little warmer.
Close to a cord so far, so I would say about average for amount consumed. However, it hasn't been overly cold here (yet) compared to some years. So far this season I've been using the wood stove as the only heat source for the main part of the house and the inside temps usually hover around 65 (my comfort zone). With the wood stove going and keeping the thermostats at 45, the boiler hasn't even kicked the baseboards on yet (except for the raised basement which the wood stove does not heat).
Definitely colder this year than last year. The cold temps we have been seeing is what I would expect to see in Jan and Feb. So yes, the ole wood stove is seeing plenty of use and burning up that firewood. It is a good thing I have 3 years' worth. No worries.
I'd say I have used the same or even as normal year. I did start as early or earlier than ever. But then there was a week or so without a fire after a few evening fires. So even though it was a little earlier start this year but the gap in useage it's about the same as what a normal year should be.
Dont think at a cord yet, especially when i am adding branches and uglies in on the days i am home and outside. Some days have been warm. We have a week of sub freezing days coming so usage will be up soon.
I have a Queen to keep warm, I burned through about a cord so far this year. Started burning early October. I estimate about another 4 or 5 cords this season. I load about 6 or 7 splits in the stove maybe 3 times a day in average winter temps of 25 to 35f. Of course I burn more when it's colder.
This is the 1st year that I've really had shoulder wood and an amount of dry chunks. The chunks are like free found wood. The shoulder wood is mostly red maple. I've emptied 1.5 wood racks. Each 8ft rack is 1/3 cord. I've been able to avoid burning 4+ year red oak. Overnight burns have been ash. I've not burned any ash before. I'm happy with the morning coals. I just topped off my deck rack with ash. We'll still burn shoulder wood during the day.
I've been burning shorts, uglies, lumber cutoffs, basswood trying to use up odds and ends before Winter really sets in. I have used zero regular firewood (unless you count basswood).
Same here, I skimp in Oct & Nov and hold off as long as possible. I'll burn the uglies and I had a nice stack of cut offs I've been using just to take chill out. I night or two we loaded up when we had a nice cold spell but I try and hold off till mid Dec if there are mild temps around. Getting ahead and getting wood is always a struggle. Mostly it's a time thing....!
Not quite a cord yet. A little behind from previous years. Had our first fire at the end of september. Woodstove is our primary heat source. So we usually have our first fire in Sept and our last in April. I only turned the oil furnace on to be sure it operated. Burned SS wood until about mid nov. Moving on to better wood. So far only early morning and evening fires.
Last year I had the stove going a few nights in September, this year I only remember two burns in all of October. Even as it is now the first of December- I'm not yet really burning "around the clock". Get it going in the morning, it mostly dies out in the afternoon and get it pumped up around 5 or 6pm and I don't do a refill before bed. It's been mild. Maybe I've burned half or better of a face cord, and 2 bundles of wood bricks evenly spread through the fires. Worth mentioning that this is the driest wood I've ever burned.... makes a huge impact.
