New Axes and Hookaroons

So after I mentioned in an Isocore thread, that I'd had good luck with my Fiskars products, my Fiskars hookaroon broke.

So I bought a couple new ones and picked up a couple new axes while I was at it.

3.5lb Council Tools Dayton axe, 36" handle. 4lb Council Tools felling axe, 28" handle. Council Tools hookaroon and a Logrite aluminum hookaroon.

I was lost without a hookaroon. Glad I got that resolved and now have a backup.

 

You won't regret buying that Logrite!

 

I've been wanting one for a couple years now, but never bought one because I never figured the Fiskars would break.

It's extremely light, like the Fiskars. So that's nice!

I really want one of their peavy's, or cants too.

You will ask yourself ; " Why didn't I buy one sooner ".

 

I forget which one it is, cant, or peavy, but one of them has a 6' handle and I would like to get that one I think. I'm pretty tall, so I think it would be beneficial.

I sure could've used one this past week, moving around some of those big rounds. It would have also been nice using one to roll the round out of a bucked up log, that gets bound up after being bucked.

That's next on the list I think.

It was the cant hook that I was wanting and it's 78" not 72".

 

Those look awesome. I can't for the life of me understand why that isocore is recommended. I see reports of them being broke quite a bit on here. I wouldn't want that hassle, warranty or not. Plus I prefer a wooden handle instrument anyway.

 

I have the Isocore maul, the X27 splitter, X25 splitter, X22 chopper, and the X7 hatchet, and had the hookaroon. I never knew they were lifetime warranty and didn't look much past the price when I bought mine, however many years ago.

I've beat the crap out of my maul and X27, but after seeing how many break, from members on here, I won't buy any more and reckon it's only a matter of time before mine break. When they do, I'll just warranty them, and put them in a corner, or sell them. They were only between 20 to 50 bucks when I got them.

I'm going to stick with wood, or a fiberglass handle that can be replaced with wood, if need be.

Where did you get the Council axes ?
No one near me carries those so it will be a mail order thing for me.

 

These I got from Bailey's. Whiskey River Trading has the FE6 and 5 lber I showed in the other thread you commented on.

Log Rite makes good stuff.

When I replaced the tip on both of mine, I kept the old tip and made a 6' long pickaroon for unloading the 8' truck. This has become one of my favorites tools. I can get all the rounds out without getting in the truck except part of the last row.

 

We’re the new tips the flat style that is the new version. One of mine has the old style. I have a replacement tip but haven’t installed it. Old one still working. I do like the new style better though.

 

Now that cant hook has character and that's not a bad thing. That's also a good idea making a super long pickaroon. I only use pickup beds, so I don't have tall sides, but it would still be useful for a few instances I can think of, off the top of my head. I'm going to steal that idea.

 

Replicate with reckless abandon.

The handle is a closet rod for hanging clothes on.

 

It was in super tough shape when I got it.

The handle was cracked so it is now glued and screwed although I have a fresh handle for it.

The center was hollow and it now has a railroad spike inside for support and the tip is welded to it. Then the center was filled with epoxy.

New end is much bigger and very sharp.

The strap of steel on the outside takes a lot of the stress rather than the wood handle and transfers it to the U clamp.

I love this cant and use it daily.


I have a new one that was made by Northern Tool. I got it off CL for $25. It was a POS and didn't work. I welded in a good 5" of metal to increase the throat of the hook, it works OK now. I was going to change the bottom but the handle is fiberglass and didn't figure it would take to welding.
