    Makes me wonder if it'll be easier when they freeze. I've only split elm once and these rounds of winged elm were only about 8 to 10 inches across. The maul I smacked them around with dented in...

    Lol! That's funny right there.
    First time I had elm I left it deep freeze under someone's recommendation. It did not "split" any different for me.

    I have to admit that I haven't split any wood in a deep freeze so I don't know if that holds water or not. Hearing the folks talk about it but do it...:faint:

    Better to let them sit in rounds until the ends crack a bunch and the bark falls off. In the log the bark will still come off in about a year but will still be tough splitting. It doesn’t go bad very soon so give it time. (2years won’t hurt it much)
