Those vent holes gave it away. I wonder why there was smoke leaking out, unless the flue was very cold and had no draft. He should make sure there is no obstruction.

You could try it...see how it fits, but it likely won't work. I hate how different brand pipes are just different enough in size to cause issues...there should be a standard! Same with stoves too...the chimney connector should be a standard size...6" should be 6" dadburnit! :BrianK:

No ideas on the leak. He bought some crazy-temp rated sealant and went around it and was able to burn a couple times, so there isn't any obstruction. I let him know I'd not burn like that and I'd get him a 90 like mine. The one I have was bought as double wall, like this:

6" Premium Double Wall Black Stove Pipe - 90º Fixed Elbow | Woodland Direct

It somewhat pinches the pipe that's inserted for a better seal.

I didn't have any issues to this point with my stuff. That 90 he had made me wonder because I never saw anything like it before. I think we'll skip it.

He's not too hopeful to burn a lot this year. I'm really trying to instill in him wood needs to be below 18-20% mc. I have a little I'll be giving him.

I had that exact one for years...it finally rusted out (pin holes in the corrugated valleys)

Double wall not needed in this application so if I can't find it for less than a reasonable amount, we'll get single and figure out why it leaked smoke on him. Strike one was he was trying to burn less than ideal wood.

Just to be clear, I was saying I had one of those corrugated single wall 90's that he has...the "leaky one"

Ah. He said it was leaking around the insertion point. That's where he gooped it up with sealant. Guess we'll get him a big ole fire extinguisher for x-mas this year too....

Is it set up correctly with the male end back toward the stove?
If so then it almost sounds like a draft issue...possibly combined with wet(ish?) wood.
Not sure what he sealed it with, but good ole fashioned furnace cement would seal 'er up...at least for a while...sometimes it cracks n falls out when trying to seal up pipe gaps like that...stuffing lil pieces of rockwool or ceramic insulation (like chimney liner insulation) in the gap works too...the ceramic is a lil better, because rockwool will degrade if exposed to direct flame.

Yes, it's all proper with connections. I'll keep that in mind if it comes to it. He told me it wasn't a cold flue scenario.

I've been away from the internet for just over a week. Got sick again, Admitted to the VA Hospital. Received very good care. Pneumonia, Congestive heart failure, severe urinary tract infection. I was very short of breath and only able to walk a couple steps. They pulled 16.5 lbs off me. I can breathe easier now I sure am happy to be home. I slept so much better. No one here sticking needles into my arms.. Both my arms are purple and yellow from my wrists to shoulder.
My son and his family live upstairs. He was able to look out for my wife. They fixed some meals for her and did a bunch of chores for her.
My dog, Riley was so glad to see me home. He just up next to me and rested his head in my lap. He is a real buddy for me to have around.

Feel better soon, Larry. It sounds like you’ve been run through the wringer. Get some rest and try to keep the weight down. I know that’s easier said than done. It is amazing how the loyalty and love of a dog can make things so much better.

Glad you are finally back home Larry. Hope you heal up quick from all the poking and prodding. The rest, take care of yourself and take your meds, we still want you around for a good long time.
