Are oaks scarce up there or just scarce in your woods? Nice sized beech too. Been a while since ive scored any.

I'd love to drag a nice beech out like that then it would meet up with Mr Stihl.

Where you have more beech trees, the oaks will be less numerous. Beech trees are a climax species in the world of plant succession. Meaning that the beech trees are one of the last to make their way in a forest. The beech trees will outcompete the oaks. Maple trees, especially sugar along with beech and hickory will outcompete the oaks. It takes a very mature forest to grow beech trees.

Same at my old wood lot. Lots of beech, hickory and sugar maple. Only a handful of oaks.

Interesting bit of info. I have lots of beech (all sizes) along with red & white oak, hickory, sugar maple, black birch in my woods.
One area within a 20' circle has all the same sized (maybe 16" dbh) white oak, black birch, beech and sugar maple. I always stop and admire them growing in harmony.

Oops. But that might be a term for a splitter that bogs down and can't split.

I knew someone would chime in. I can't make that term up, that's just what it is. Succession: How a forest recreates itself - Maine TREE Foundation

Yeah there's some studies that show how beech and oaks do better together. But eventually the oaks get drowned out by the beech trees.
I am funny recall that in a certain Rush song. Idk if Geddy Lee ever took any botany classes. :emb:

I love beech in the stove. Got a split of beech, a split of black locust, and a hickory cooking right now!
