I'm not a truck guy, engine guy or mechanic at all.... I don't know what motors UPS has in their delivery trucks. But homeboy just come by here driving it like he stole it. Turned at the intersection and hammer down...like he had the bubble guts and was danger close. Made a delivery within hearing distance. Came back by driving the same. Turned into another neighbors long driveway and went down that like it was the end of the day and his 20 year old girlfriend was waiting on him..... I was impressed...
When they come flying up my long drive I chew on them. No reason to tear up my driveway. What I tell my students and those drivers, "all of my rocks are numbered and placed where they belong, you leave them as is while driving on my driveway!"
Yeah, I was thinking the same when he went down the Coghill's driveway.... At the end of this dude's day, I bet he has a list of people and sponsors that he thanks....
they have several types of engines in them. From the old school cummins to the mercedes diesel to v10's. With some newer modular engines in the mix as well. And yes some of them can really scream. Depending on when they spec'd and bought them depends on what engine came with it. Some of them were lucky to even start lol they usually left those ones sit in the back lot until this time of year, "peak" season and all hands including clunkers and uhaul rentals are on deck edited to add- ups is pretty strict with the drivers on their times. Most have a pizz bottle in the truck. They need to punch out if they want to #2. They also know all parameters of that truck, from if the seat belt is clicked before it was put in gear to e brakes being set, hazards on etc.
I know some of the older ones had 7.3 power strokes and at one point had 5.9 Cummins in them. I think it all depends on the contract and price they got to build the trucks at that time .
Most of the local delivery trucks they've gone back to gas engines in them...diesels just cost to much to buy and maintain/repair...and the fuel mileage is down from where it used to be also. Our local route driver drives it like he stole it too...that thing is almost bouncing off the rev limiter in at least the first 2-3 gears...then he jams on the brakes and turns. But hey, they ride the drivers pretty hard about still getting their ever expanding routes done...especially bad around Christmas
I actually kinda like watching the ups guys working.....not very often I see an American actually hurry at work. But, I'd sure hate to be responsible for accidents and mechanical repairs.
They didn't used to run their trucks this hard...but I think they are having to do more with less too, just like many places. My buddy is a UPS mechanic...he said they don't have breakdowns very much...everything is on a strict mileage schedule for replacement...drivetrain, axles, everything...and then the whole truck gets rotated out on a schedule too.
Clems, where did you get the new rubber insulation for your truck windows? I got all mine done but the rattle ones where my window rolls down into my tailgate in the Blaze. Thanks
Like any fix it guy went to eBay and sorted cheapest first! . And got the kit that had all the rubber parts I wanted in one kit as cheap as possible. (Actually some came from LMC just can't remember which parts) I think it might of been precision brand? A lot of it's the same , whether you get it from LMC, Brothers, or a few that I can't remember right now there all about the same from the same supplier probably. Your going to need to do the tracks and the felts probably.
Both brown and white truck drivers drivem like it’s stolen here too. The usps guy on the other hand….
Our UPS regular said they moved away from diesel to 6.0 Chevy V8 engines because they are cheaper to buy and maintain. Thats been 4-5 years now. They sound very healthy and rip around here too. They might have a larger LS Chevy engine in them now as I don't keep up on the big three's vehicles much.
Check out fairchild automotive, I bought some for my 86 doors. do it on a warm day, you need to let that stuff warm up to work it easier.
Thank you, that's what I did in the 2000's, the whole kit, started with the top tailgate and stopped there. Flash forward to today, a mechanic just installed everything left in the box but the darn glass rattle strip is missing . LMC's been out of stock for months and months. There is another few companies like LMC and Brothers I just can't remember their names. I think I have catalogs from them just don't remember the names of hand .
By the sound of our regular driver's truck I would guess it is LS powered. Makes sense....all these new diesels all come equipped with a $10K fuel system time bomb.
My dog gets spun up when he hears their truck pull into town, but I think it must be part of the hiring process to have a lead foot, because they get after it here too. Rock Auto .com is another place to check.
Those trucks can't get great fuel mileage, especially being run like that...can you imagine their corporate fuel bill?!!
