I’m curious to see how folks with limited property in the suburbs hoard wood. I have about 1.5 cords out my door near stove in a small shed. And an additional couple cords on palates in far yard for seasoning. Curious what other creative solutions people come up with on a postage stamp lot, around 1/3 of an acre or less.

Last year I had a small Amazon rack with a topper (quickly exceeded). This year I’ve expanded my immediate wood crib (still exceeded).

Go taller. I have a few 6' tall stacks. Neater rows and cubes for short/nuggets etc. Ill get some pics tomorrow.

There's a few of us Connecticut FHCers in the same boat and it aint easy. Some i have seen firsthand.

Genuinely curious how others get by. I’m in Virginia and that is a 6’ fence in back. Neater stack noted. I could do better in this regard. But if you saw some of the wood piles I see around here (is there a comedy thread for crap wood piles?!), mine is doing alright. I tend to like a smaller log for a neat and tight stack. Then I go source wood from friends and family out in the country with big chunky logs and it throws my whole stack off. Still trying to nail down the right formula. Thanks!

Here's my small supply of firewood
(the blue tarp has been replaced with a darker brown to blend with scenery and is adjusted to allow airflow inside crate of kindling)

Any friends or family live nearby?

Might they be OK with you storing wood on their property?

Just a little hint. You would find the tarps would last a lot longer if more smooth on top because then rain and snow would not "puddle." Naturally ice can ruin the tarps rather quickly.

    • Some picturs of my stacks. The deed said 0.39 acres when I purchased the house.. that includes the land the house and driveway are on. I do use a bit of land owned by the gas company across the street, but that area is only about 40×40 ft.

Nice storage area you have there. And I think by keeping it at the height you do, your neighbors appreciate it so they won't have to view the top of the piles and or shed roof over the 6' fence. Very considerate of you.

The first thing I thought of was to go higher also, but I think maybe you don't want to? Do you have any more room to go longer? After that, it would be to go 4 rows deep instead of 2 rows deep. Hard to give up yard but the pay out is what makes it worth it all.

I’m in DC metro. So all the lots here are small. My nearest real wood place is West Virginia (2 hours) or PA (4 hours). That’s a long run to the stove.

I like the sign posts! Where do you get the metal crates from? A couple of those would help me out. Pretty good supply for the suburbs! :)

Plenty of suburban hoarders out there with limited property. My cousin just got into hoarding as he put a stove in last year, smaller property 0.25 he's got wood everywhere. He even took the kids swing sets down that's how obsessed he is with hoarding, LMAO. He's running out of room and his wife is gonna kill him.

Holz Hausen for postage stamp lots. There is debate on how well they cure, I haven't followed it enough to know either way.
Guy across the street from the other house is a hoarder, he just leaves it in piles though.
Nice hoard he has though. Won't be back that way till the weekend, I'll see about getting a pic of his yard. probably will derail from this topic though

Look for IBC totes on your marketplace (fb) or OfferUp or Craigslist. Any other sell-your-stuff apps or the like.

I sell most my wood. Personal use is for campground (2 cords a year) or indoor fireplace ( less than a face a year).
There is an industrial cleaning company near me that sells those totes ( with the bladders still in them) for $25 each. When I bought mine 3yrs ago they were $10 each. Look on Craigslist or fb marketplace. Any company that uses lots of liquid chemicals will have some....I saw a pressure washing company giving them away. Even companies that make shampoo and body washes may have some

We're on about the same size postage stamp as you RippinLogs .
    We've managed to stuff about 30 cord here...and a few at a friend's place.

Everything on pallets, no single-wide rows here.

I also, like BuZzsaw said, we went taller. Only one row sits at 4'tall. The rest are 5 or 6' tall.

None are stacked in roofed structures (=limits).

We have a 35' row along the road, and when stacked 4x4x35 is about 4 cord of 16" splits. I started cutting to 22" this year (our stove will take 24"), and stacked that single row of pallets 3 rows wide, overhanging the pallets by 6" on each side. We (Sirchopsalot Jr. ) also stacked beyond 6'tall. Instead of 4 cord, we stuffed 9 cord on that single row of pallets.
There is a thread at "Long awaited ash score" that has pics from start to finish of that build.

We have 24 cord in rows, 5 cord stacked up at the house for this winter's use, a cord of shorts in the shorts shed, a cord of SS/ash splits.

I reckon how much and where you stack will be dependant on your land characteristics: topography, fences, shaded areas etc. We've almost no shade here.

He should have left the swing set frame up to support a tarp then put wood under it
