Do you have a link to custom molded recommendation?

Double hearing protection for most of the equipment... what does that entail?

That's a great idea. Wonder where those can be found?
Sometimes my ears get sore from certain ear plugs

I had mine cast at miracle ear and they send them off to be molded from the cast they make of your ear canals. They are kind of spendy, but you only buy them once and I used my HSA account to pay for them since I use them for work. I have a pair for the house as well and use them all the time, they clean super easy and are very comfortable.

Earmuffs over plugged ears, we have only been required to start wearing this like a month ago. I was walking over to a compressor this week with my muff flipped up on my hard hat and flipped them down, wow what a difference. Custom molded usually yield low 30’s for noise reduction.

I know a few guys in the audio recording field who swear by the custom mold ear plugs. It's definitely a good route to take.
I have another set I use for when I go to concerts that was given to me by one of them. Can't recall their name I'll dig them up and see if they have a name on them.

Miracle Ear didn’t even charge me to make the castings, I just had to pay for the plugs themselves. I think I had them back in less than 2 weeks.

Bose QC35's here. Have used while mowing and have no trouble carrying a conversation on the phone. Even the other party says they barely hear the mower. Haven't used for sawing or the splitter but may try that today if I go out.

    Just plain ol' ear plugs......
Been using em for 35 years running saws, mills, old loud heavy equipment, for a living.....no hearing loss as far as I can tell.
I don't like any kind of ear muffs.....too uncomfortable.....they overheat my little brains in the summer.

Should add that I normally just use muffs. Nerve deafness so try and protect what little I have left.

I couldn’t tell either, but I do have hearing loss, I also have tinnitus so I as well am trying to keep/protect what I have left.

Good observations, I was wondering if somebody was going to mention the possibility of hearing loss that we don't perceive without some kinda doctor test.
I may be guilty of that....

Let us know how you like them. Mine are just hunting/gun range units and on the bulky side.

I never tried any headphones piping in music while doing a loud activity. Maybe it's possible they negate the loud noise and filter or cancel it such that the overall decibel level isn't bad, so, you're right.

    Isotunes Free 2.0

I can say they do just that! I can speak only for the isotunes earbuds and muffs as that is what I have experience with. The earbuds fit under most muffs so your not stuck with just one set of muffs for everything. For example: I wear the earbuds at work under my helmet muffs running my chipper and loud ported chainsaws and can listen to most anything I want at a safe volume; I can also wear these while mowing without muffs and they work the same. If I had just a set of muffs on my helmet I’d either need to look like a short bus candidate and wear my helmet while mowing or I’d need a separate set of muffs for listening to music while mowing. But one thing is certain they are certified to reduce noise while allowing you to listen to whatever you like at a safe volume.

We had a Audiologist come to work giving a class on hearing safety. He was asked why double hearing protection-plugs and muffs. His answer was that the plugs do not bring the decibels down to below 85 on their own. And if they did the bone just under the skin behind the ear acts like a tuning fork and transmit sound around the plug defeating its effectiveness. A pair off muffs protects hearing from to include that bone but muffs by themselves don’t bring the level down to acceptable levels by themselves.

This was the only time I have ever had a good explanation of what is happening with ear plugs/muffs. I can tell you with out a doubt tell the difference is substantial, I personally have been using double hearing protection ever since. Trying to keep what little I have left. I make the kids also wear double.
