Most here know of my love of BL. Frost has killed off weeds and overgrowth. Time for me to start hitting several areas i have "tucked away". This includes some ive hit in the past but havent depleted.

So FHC, how much BL will i scrounge between now and say Mid April? Take the poll.

Got started today. Small storm clean up area i spotted last year en route to a delivery. IMG_2040.JPG IMG_2039.JPG IMG_2041.JPG IMG_2042.JPG IMG_2045.JPG Not as much as i thought. Maybe 1/4 cord. Its a start. IMG_2043.JPG IMG_2046.JPG Some additional mystree wood that was barkless and ready to burn. Thought it to be BL but wasnt . IMG_2044.JPG IMG_2047.JPG

I see a couple voters have lofty expectations for me at over nine cords. Dont think i have that much at my disposal. Most of what ill be scrounging is storm clean up wood Bill. Basically logs cut and left to rot. A lot of this is remnants from two storms here August 2020

Thats a great question and i wish i had an honest answer. One thing is i never had heard of it until i became a member here. There was a strange log laying roadside just down the street which i thought chestnut oak that turned out to be BL
The fact that its so rot proof. The stuff i got yesterday had been sitting for 26 months and some bark was still tight. I can scrounge stuff thats decades old and wood still good.
Getting a good premium for a cord of it doesnt hurt my love for it either. Although i work a lot harder to harvest it than other woods.

I pulled some out of muddy drainage swell that was solid. I don’t know how long it had been laying in the muck when I rescued it.

I dont think i have that much at my disposal. I have to "hunt" it down. The areas i have for this thread havent been that accessible due to the overgrowth. A couple i may leave for future scrounging as i doubt anyone would take the wood.

Somewhere out there there’s a 12 cord wad of BL that you haven’t discovered yet. :stacker:

I cut some two years ago that had a tree growing around it. Its rot resistance is amazing. Cant tell you the number of times ive been at a score and, like you, have excavated it to scrounge.

LOCUST MANIA BABY! :dex: :tree: :saw:

Well i did find one a year ago. Not 12 cord, but a decent amount. Ask Eric Wanderweg as i texted a pic to him when i found it. Big pile of cut up logs that my FHC peripheral vision caught and i U turned, knocked and they were keeping it in case of an emergency. It was sopping wet with loose bark. Dunno how they expected to burn it.

I recently procured a score that will yield three cords. that will get its own thread as well as posted here.

I have complete confidence that you will rise to the challenge. Use your 500 and 462 as divining rods and they will show you the way. :saw:

I haven't heard a wood scrounge that he doesn't go gaga over unless it's something he doesn't wanna pick up right? He's a lot like me when I hear black Locust is near me .

I put in a more modest expectation, Brad. Not that you can't exceed it which I won't be surprised if you do. What you find and take home/process vs what's out there near you overall is high though. Doubt there's a short supply of BL around you so can't blame those for voting you up!

buZZsaw BRAD Some of those pieces of barkless wood with the crack running the length of the piece almost looks like elm that has been dead for awhile. I get quite a bit of elm that looks like that.

It wasnt elm. My guess was tree of heaven or box elder. It had some reddish heartwood similar to BE.
