We did some stacking yesterday, and I went out for a little this morning before church activities. There is a little more to do on the far side of the pile. But I also figured out what to do with the end of the row, and raked leaves and bark away from the stack. (I'm 5'13"), but not standing straight.
Nice Dave! Is that double or triple row? Surprised the pooch didnt hop on top of the stack for a photo op!
3 rows of 20" and 22". One pallet has already partially collapsed....I stuffed some logs under one side of the stack to keep it from getting worse, or having to restack..... I love being able to get a lot more wood in about the same footprint as before. Your maple score looked good, what have you pulled out of those trees so far?
Kiddo and I picked up the rest of the splits leftover from yesterday, and made a full load for today. I split a couple rounds to top the load off. The truck tailgate comes with a built-in dog watering bowl. Anyone ever whack away at a stump? this one was left by the tree service, because of possible metal. I cut more, found none, and decided to split it in place. And then found metal. Those 2 black dots are some heavy screws. They're still there, will split around them next time we're out. No more squirrel. Got tired of it eating my darn lunch.
Havent tallied as no processing done yet. More to be taken down. I guess close to a cord of decent wood so far. Some of that has overly punky wood which will become compost. Dont know when ill get back to working there. Few spots for new wood including todays cut. Thread coming.
well, the newest stack is complete. I need a bit more plastic to cover the last 10' yet. I will measure it when the light is on outside. Less the shoulder season wood, I reckon we have 7 cord, easily a year's worth, on what should have been a 4 cord stack. I see 2 pallets that have crushed partly already. At 5' wide, and 5.5' tall at one end and over 6' tall at the other (as the ground drops off), thats a lot of weight. Next time, I'll use 2 rows of pallets and shoot for 4 or 5 rows.
Today's update. and its a mind blower. The Boy and I covered the Ash Score stack with a heavier plastic today in anticipation of the rain we're now getting. We decided to use regular wood to hold it all down, rather than bits of lumber, pallets, large ticks and the like. Using up a few pieces of cordwood looks uniform, and no need for special pieced of wood to be kept on hand for top-covering. We measured out the stack, and using the "find the volume of a swimming pool" formula. The stack is 35' long, 5' 7" wide and 6' 2" on one end and 5' 10" on the shallow end . . . not including the SS wood and Ash taking up about 7' on one end that I didn't count in. That comes to 9 cord on one stack, that if stacked 4x4x35 would have been 4.3 cord. That's a year and a half of wood for us in one stack. And so, we have 21 cord from last years' scrounges here, 7 cord at tour friend's place, and now another 9 (or 10) from this years ash (and 1 oak and maple) scores. that's 37 cord on hand, 6+ years of wood C/S/S. Stumpy took me to dinner at his favorite eatery tonight. I'm running on zero sleep, having covered our wood, covered a friend's pile I've been making, and brought wood in for another elderly friend....before the rain hit this afternoon. We spent time number crunching the numbers and established the above. A special thanks to Stumpy, for still moving more cordwood around here than any one other person: the Boy, who has split like a machine beside me for many hours this year and share many laughs and good moments. AND our God, who has brought me the people, equipment, time and ability to orchestrate C/S/S 23 cord this year alone, 20 of that by hand, maybe 17 of that my own 2 hands and Isocore. And for a lot of encouraging (enabling?) words from Fellow Hoarders here. I'm going to take a few days and focus on house chores that need to me done, more wood to be split fir sure, but the big stack is done and covered, and that is a good resting place to be for the moment.
