So at work last night in Worcester, I found these fellows along the tracks in an industry. I'm the one who picks up things I find on the ground, and these for sure caught my attention. Never having seen anything like these, a few came home . Made me think of those little furry things that took over the Enterprise once...I half way thought the vacant locomotive cab would be populated with dozens of these by the time we got home.

I didn't get a good look at the tree, or the bark, but pulled this leaf off the tree the seed pods came from, and stuffed it in my pocket. If I'm back there tonight, I'll take a little closer look at the tree and bark.

They have a sweet aromatic smell, perfumy even. not fruity though. these things are hard, not at all soft. They'd fallen 10 or better feet off the trees, bounced down a hill, and across a driveway, and save for the ones crushed by trucks, were largely unscathed by their journey.

They are from a Osage Orange tree. A tree across the street from my house puts out tons of those. They become a nuisance during the end of mowing season.

Some people say they keep spiders always but I’ve heard that’s an old wives tale.

Looks like the beginning of a Thanksgiving casserole, or Osage stuffing.

Yes, there is hope, and more of those will be following me home for sure!
I have some open yard space, and a few other places where these might grow well. But a little more learning is in order.....don't want to be propagating something nasty.

Im trying to figure out how I can get some limbs or trimmings from the existing trees for heating purposes.

    Stoked at this find.

They are called monkey balls around here.

Any time I want some there is a family who have a couple trees of them and they told me several times to just stop and grab what I want but I usually talk to them for a while as they are nice people.

For those who don't know, they are a bit sticky when they fall. Some around here try to cash in and sell them @ 2 for $1.00.

Now you need to find the tree and cut it down! Best firewood there is I've heard. We don't have them around here.

That was not a serious response, but it does appear you could use a grater and turn it into salad. Can hogs eat them?
