Brad, I saw one on my way to middletown a few weeks ago, going north out of New Haven. It was a neat sighting!

They used to be uncommon here. Now they're everywhere. I can send you a couple dozen if you like.

We have a few black squirrels here but mostly brown or red squirrels . There is one black squirrel with a full white tail that comes around every now and then too.

This year we are starting to see a black squirrel around our place. I have seen them many times in La Crosse.

Where we use to live, 7 miles down the road, we had black and gray squirrels. Here it is gray and red squirrels.

Grey and black are color phases of the same squirrel. Fox squirrels are a larger cousin. And then there’s the little red bastages

We have these in my area.

There's a gene mutation that results in white, brown, or black coats.

The grey squirrels go after any of their mutant cousins and kill them. It's rather unfortunate. We had a snow white squirrel in our front yard tree for a couple years.

Yeah, those little red ones can make a mess and be nasty. Even the bigger grey squirrels stay away from them. Haven't seen one in quite some time though. Never saw a black squirrel around here.
