These 2 corners of the score are done and gone. 3.5 cord for me, and half a cord for a friend. I put in a few hours with the 460 on the bigger tree deck, and got a lot done, including moving tops and brush to have access to the best of it. I bet there are 3+ cord there. Then of course there are a couple trees on the road the tree service said they'd leave for me..... Funny enough, people in this town don't burn wood. I guess they all make enough to purchase oil? So the roadkill wood will be there for my taking.
Get it all, if you can! If you can cut the logs to stove length, can you get them outta there, stack them as are, and split as time allows?
The road is dangerous right there....I think I'll cut to size and roll over to my friend's property same side of the road, and deal with from there. Most of the trees aren't more than 10" or thereabouts. I absolutely will get all I can! I bet we'll get a years' supply out of this one score alone. Not having burned ash, I don't know how well it'll hold out cord for cord vs oak. I'm not sure if I'm organized enough to mix Ash and Oak into my winter stack when they're moved up to the house. We might go though more than 6 cord if the bulk of it is Ash and not Oak.
We'll find out for sure in a year or two. I have three years of Oak here, and a year of oak ash mix elsewhere, not counting the Ash we're bringing in now. It will be a bit before we do an Ash year. I'll take your word for it though, and continue raking it all in. I am hoping to take next year largely off from hoarding though, I'm ok to push harder now and get this all in. And then call it quits for a bit. SCA
nah, not quitting. Just easing waaay back, I really want to gather materials for the retaining wall over the winter, and start building it soon as spring hits.
Very cool score/thread Dave. I had my saw with me in the truck today and planned to cut a heaping load of downed ash that was pushed down a bank this spring. Alas, I could see it was too far gone to be worth the trouble. I’ll live vicariously through you for now
I’ve only made a few fires this year. First year having any Ash. Preliminary results are a mix of ash and oak is an awesome combo. It’s official, my mother told me today she loves the ash LOL I may have to break my promise to myself and scrounge some more. Try the mix, be like mom LOL
Even part of a year. Hopefully I can gather all the materials and get most of it done in time to do some hoarding!!
So the tree service for the town did stop in, and took 3 Ash trees off the road. The best parts of the tree were not left on the shoulder, but stacked neatly on the property the Ash score is on! It came to a bit more than a half trailer load (1/4+cord) The Boy, Stumpy and myself split it and more rounds off the larger tree deck for a full load home this afternoon. That was trip number 9 pulled out of there for us. I estimate there are 6 to 8 trailer loads remaining at the score. Time for a nap before work. Sca
Nice score on top of the score! Headed back into work shortly myself, I really don’t like the night shift!
The upside is that after sleep, I get a little time in the woods. On dayshift and shorter days, there's pretty much no daylight time outside. Otherwise, I agree that working nights is bad stuff. Have a good shift! Sca
Friday Stumpy and I hit the Ash score again. I played chainsaws until he arrived, getting the tops cut down, and brush cut away from the tree deck. This in preperation for hanging out w BuZZsaw Brad saturday. I was operating on maybe 4 hrs sleep, and didnt realize how fatigued I was till I undercut a branch, and nicked a rock real good. It was an older chain, so one more sharpening in it anyway, but it was time to put power tools away. I split a litle by hand, and we took home 1/4cord, and stacked most of it.. Pics to follow today, of yesterday's work.
