Anyone CSM honey locust?

Do you guys have many out east? They're really good in dry areas, so they're all over out here. Most of the towns planted them.

The ones out here are common as yard/commercial plantings. They are the thornless hybrid variety,,thank God. The ones with the thorns are evil looking and i doubt id touch one if i had the opportunity.

 

Most of ours are thornless, but we have them here and there. They're the best tree we have for firewood, of any abundance anyway. We get the occasional hedge tree, but not often.

I found, a reciprocating sawzall with a long blade, works wonders on removing the thorns and getting them out of the way. Top handle saw works good too, but the flex in the recip blade makes it work a bit better IMO.

 

Ive never seen a thorned one in the "wild" and dont think they are native here. We do have some thorned trees...black locust, which is not always thorny, is the one ive dealt with.

 

That's interesting. Only ones thorned out here are honey locust. I've never seen a thorned black locust.

 

The thorns are small like a rose bush (thank God) and not all have them

 

I just searched for a picture..........yeah, those are way different. I'm not sure I'd mess with that either. Lol Our thorns are in bunches, so cutting them off is pretty easy.

Hardest wood I’ve ever millled. Last cut was about 2 tanks.



Decided to mill this with the large crack horizontal. At this point, we stopped the saw. Ben used a skid steer to flip it over and I’m going to cut 2 slabs at 3.5” thick (another day).



The chunk above (orange arrow in pic below) was tool long for the 10’ 2x6 he brought for first cut, so I cut it down and this was the leftover chunk. Might be firewood.




This is the measurements at the base (green arrow below). The 68” was taken about 15’ up were it crotched (white arrow below).




Orange is firewood. There is decay in the base so the plan is to take 24” rounds till it’s gone and see what’s left of the main stem.

The blue arrow piece will get milled when I’m finished with the one I started. It’s about 7.5’ long and:

I had him prop up one end to assist in cutting. Wishing I had a winch on this. Been cuttin pretty slow but what do you expect for 36-37” locust.

 

After seeing what was inside and hearing me say I wouldn’t just cut it up for firewood, he’s going to try and find someone with a bigger saw/bar to mill that base. Said he has a friend with an 881 and a 5 footer. He knows my mill is 48” so not sure what will happen there. What a huge piece of wood! Have to stand next to it to appreciate its girth. This is at a friend of Ben’s and the guy said it was 3k to drop it.

 

Holy chit Jason. Yeah its not easy to appreciate the size of a log unless standing next to it.
Does this mean a bigger saw is in your future?
