I just replaced the convection fan in my hastings and on it's first run i noticed that it's not changing speeds now. I unplugged the stove while I was replacing it and hooked the motor wires back up as they should be. The only difference is this new motor came with a ground wire and the old one did not have one. That shouldn't affect fan speed though. Normally when I turn the stove on the fan would blow at a high speed for a few seconds and then shut off until it senses heat. At startup This new motor only spins at a lower speed then shuts off. It almost seems as though the stove is stuck on level 1 now.

    Any thoughts?

Never seen any 110 volt shaded pole motor on any appliance that didn't have 2 leads. Sure one didn't somehow break off? (I presume it's shaded pole right)??? 2 leads are necessary for the coil to become magnetized.

Blower speeds are controlled by the Variacs on the control board, the 'chop' the current and regulate the blower speed. The motors are synchronous, that is, they spin at a constant speed.

Sounds to me like a board issue. You did unplug it over the summer and or you have a surge suppressor on the input cord???

Don't own that brand but they are all basically the same.

From another forum, when I owned a Hastings and I answered a very similar question (and it happened to point in the right direction): is it perhaps in thermostat mode and either it isn't hooked to a thermostat, or the room temp is above the temp set on the thermostat?

Reply from OP: Well, that was it... the thermostat wire was disconnected.. turns out that even when the stove is manual, the thermostat "loop" needs to be closed by either being hooked up to the thermostat or having a jumper to close the loop.

    Hope it is that simple

corncob yep it's a shaded pole motor and does have two leads other than the ground. I hooked them back up exactly like the old motor. And yes i had the stove unplugged all off season. It's been running fine these last few weeks with fires in the evening to take the chill off.

Now I'm thinking I'm just crazy. After looking the stove wiring over multiple times last night and running the stove a few times, I did notice the fan speed change. The sound wasn't very noticeable between levels 3-5 but when I dropped it to 1 it was very noticeable (almost whisper quiet. I could also tell that the auger cycle time was changing as it should throughout the different levels and the fire was acting accordingly. It seems that this new blower is probably a good 50% quieter than the old one and I was just fooled by how loud the old one was. It's been that loud since day one (other than the new squeal it developed a few weeks ago) so I just assumed it was normal. It got late last night so I shut it down hoping it's all in my head haha. I'll see how she runs this afternoon.

You're not crazy. (concerning this anyway ). I have the same stove, and since I replaced the blower, it seems to run on high most of, if not all of the time.

I should probably not admit it but I leave mine plugged in all summer but it's plugged into the Tripp-Lite outlet mounted surge suppressor which is always displaying 2 green lights, one for ground and the other for suppression. Same with the one in the shop.

Like I said, motor speed on a shaded pole motor is varied by chopping the input voltage via the Variacs. A shaded pole motor will turn at whatever the input frequency is and how the armature is skewed, hence shaded pole name.

Bogieb's comment holds true of you have it on a remote t'stat and the jumper is removed from the board. Could also be your batteries in your remote t'stat need replacing as well. I had to renew mine this fall.

Wish mine was that quiet, the convection fan is but the stirrer motor isn't. I just added a sheet of rubber between the motor restraining arm and the motor itself, the agitator motor is very irritating noise wise. Gearbox has plenty of grease, just gave it a shot with my needle greaser.

Running presently but I'll probably shut it off sometime today is the outside temp warms up. It's barely 40 here and windy.

Update: After running the stove for a few hrs so far this afternoon I have determined that I am indeed crazy and the blower is working as it should. It's just so much quieter than the old one  . Not gonna lie, I lost a little sleep over this dang thing last night.

Sometimes it's better to be slightly paranoid but rest assured, if the firebox over heated, the high limit snap disc would shut it down.

Toasty 72 in here. Wife, cats and dog are all happy. Spitting snow outside.

Refurbish the old one as time (and finances) allow. I have spares of everything myself.
