City tree ID, please?

I saw this small pile of wood while running a call at work. When I got off shift, I went and grabbed the good sized rounds. It was about a block from the station, so I couldn't pass it up.

Any idea what type it is? A few of the smaller rounds are rotted out in the middle, but the outer 2/3 are very solid.

Boxelder.

 

X2 Boxelder. Leaves resemble poison ivy, prolific seed producer, young twigs are green in color, and like all maples it has opposite branching. You'll probably like your Doug Fir better for burning, but BE isn't horrible. The good news is that it might be dry by the time you pull into your driveway

 

Definitely Acer negundo (box elder) get it split and stacked off the ground and it’ll be ready to burn in about a month. Gooder shoulder season wood.

 

Nice grab Cash! Couldnt ID it. Ive only grabbed a couple pieces of BE at the dump once. Kind of on my bucket list to score a PU full.

Piling on here for a similar question. Trying to decide if it’s worth getting in the truck for. What do you think that is?

 

Looks like cottonwood, I wouldn’t bother unless you’re hard up on your firewood supply.

 

I thought it might be willow with the staining on the small logs.

And that larger round in the back looks to have the more linear bark of an elm? Or am I just imagining that?

 

My first thought was actually red elm, but the furrows in the bark being blocky like that say cottonwood. That larger round does look like a different species altogether, and that could be elm.

This thread got my looking around and I think I found my new favourite website. I’m surprised it burns like paper. A couple of those big rounds were quite stout when I loaded them into my truck. I need to leave a maul in my truck. I feel like I say that every time I load heavy rounds.

 

Box elder the ugliest tree known to man thank god it was cut down.

If it makes you feel any better, it will also get burned to ashes

 

Box elder seems to loose half it weight when dry. Trying to split it when green has water bubbling up from where the maul hits it. It is like trying to split a wet sponge. If you are into wood turning or know someone who is, BE is good for that activity.
