I have a County Line 25 ton splitter with Kohler 6.5hp motor. I got tired of finicky starting/running issues over the past couple of years and I bought a replacement carbueretor off of Amazon. Cost $18. I installed it and all seemed to be correct. Started first pull and ran real smooth. But it did seem that it didn't have enough throttle response versus was it used to have. Meaning there wasn't a whole lot of throttle difference in minimum throttle and maximum throttle. Upon using the splitter, it just does not have as much power as it used to. It bogs down. Like way down. Almost comes to a stop and then the wedge splits the wood and it revs back to maximum. But it's like it is sluggish, like it does not have torque or power. I note that I see what appears to be an adjustment screw or two on the carb. Could this be an adjustment issue? I am running e-free gas like I always have and I'll admit it's 2-3 months old but I don't think I have ever had a problem with that before. Could 'old' gas be a problem? TIA! EDIT: If it's a carb adjustment issue, I have no idea what to do. If you know a specific procedure, advise.
If you put stabilizer in the gas when you bought it, probably not a gas problem. Even if you didn't I don't think at 3 months it would be a gas problem.
Watch some videos on how to adjust the carb for that splitter. It sounds like a carb adjustment issue.
Yes, there's a couple linkages more than likely. Ones for the governor. They are really fussy about how they are aligned. Check the repair manual/ YouTube on that model engine.
I think something is wrong with my install because when I move the throttle, there is barely any change in the throttle response. But... there was hardly anything to screw up because it's just two wires, one thick wire and one thin wire, the latter having a spring. I guess that is hooking up the governor. I did watch a youtube but I will search for another. Thanks.
Its possible that there is a throttle limiting screw on the new carb...you don't see them very often, but occasionally. Have a pic? .
More than likely it is not a fuel issue I have had mixed results with amazon carbs . Check your linkage hole locations some aftermarket carbs the holes are not in the same location ,check the bore size of the carb I have had some replacement carbs come with smaller bores . if your throttle is not moving to full open you have a linkage out of adjustment or in the wrong location. the last is the main jet if it is adjustable is usually on the bottom of the carburetor open that up slightly 1/4 turn at a time and see if that helps JB
I think I have it fixed. I mentioned those two wires, one thick, stiff one and the other much smaller, flimsy one with the spring... the stiff one sticks into this plastic lever gizmo and it just did not seat properly all the way. I stuck it in there good, I hope, and it is running much better and also has the normal throttle response. I had to partially remove the carburetor to properly seat that stiff wire. The gaskets that came with this $18 carburetor sure seem cheap, they are already breaking. Hmmm... wonder if I need to replace them. If I were to seek better gaskets, anyone know what I should look for? Brand or other?
