We had some strong winds Thursday. Yesterday I had time to take a walk in the woods to look for blowdowns. No blowdowns. But I did see a fox, a couple deer This dude And scored a few paw paws Paw paws dropping early this year. I know some dropped from the wind, but there are a bunch already well rotted. The one I had was brought in by our math teacher back in 6th grade... ... He was a avid bowhunter... It tasted a lot like a banana to me. Biddleman can correct if my memory doesn't serve me right.. He also introduced me to Persimmons... Both of which Deer love...
The best I can explain is they taste like a cross between a mango and banana. Some people taste more banana, others the mango. They have a distinct flavor. Also depends how ripe they are. When they are almost to the point of going to rot, they have the mosr flavor IMO. JWinIndiana, you can make bread, cookies, muffins, cupcakes, ice cream, smoothies, salsa, and jam with them. Among other things. Im going to try and make jam. Last night I made a daiquiri type drink with them and some peach schnapps. It was pretty good, if I do say so myself.
A walk in the woods is always rewarding even without finding firewood. Ive heard of paw paw but have never seen one or their fruit. Thanks for the education.
I've only found paw paw fruit one time.. usually the animals get them before I know they're there. But I've never sought them out, so it was just a timing and happenstance thing. They did taste banana-ish to me....
