Had some pretty strong winds come through 5-6 weeks ago and finally got around to cleaning up downed limbs. All red oak, ended up with over a face cord.
That is a strong wind. You on a hill? I live rather high up and every few years or so we’ll get some that tear the tops of the trees off. Usually just one small spot at a time. It’s weird.
No, actually we are pretty much flat (northern Illinois) and live in a 1 acre clearing in the middle of ~150 acres of woodland, so we are usually quite sheltered from winds. The county around us got 70-90 mph wind gusts so even with our sheltered spot we got hit decently hard.
Did some more cutting today (red oak blow down from 2 years ago) and noticed 3 more trees down from the wind gusts: One is a decent sized red oak which had a major lean, one dead standing red oak, and another a couple hundred feet back which I can’t get close to yet due to undergrowth. Definitely have my work cut out for me this winter trying to clean up the property border!
Thanks, around 4 cords on average. This year I have ~2 face cords of lower btu wood ready to go before I get into my oak stash.
