Good gracious these Honey Locust pods are huge! This one was one of the “smaller” ones and was shriveled up. Some of the bigger ones when alive were no doubt 13”-14”
It’s rare (around here) to find the wild types with the seed pods. I’d snatch a few up and do some guerrilla planting next spring
See, now I thought these were the “domesticated” ones. No thorns and all planted at the edge of a large shopping center parking lot
Ive always thought those seed pods are cool and have seen long ones like that. Shake them like a miniature maraca. Not all trees have them either. Awesome firewood if you ever get a chance to scrounge any.
I learned that to plant honey locust from seed you have to prepare the seeds or they won't germinate. Normally they have to be eaten and pass through the animals digestive tract. Luckily we can just soak them in 190 degree water for a while to soften the shell
That’s what I did with black locust seeds and it definitely works. Pretty high germination rate after you soften that protective coating on the outside
