It’s been awhile. Memory sucks. It was 1934 and they’re held by the state library not UConn.
Beyond my memory take your pick (pun intended)

Wow! That’s an amazing resource. I can see (just as I suspected) where my house is was just a wooded area even back then. Being on a long steep hill wasn’t conducive to farming, and to this day there are still many massive old trees along my road.

FWIW if you go to East Hampton, all the way to the top, photo 6929, just to the right of center, the four way intersection, is my grandparents farm where I live now, almost always have. It’s not a four way anymore. At least not for cars :)
It was 1936 the state made all the woods to the north and west a state forest. I guess I’m grandfathered in LMAO. Always said that’s my woods I just let the state pretend it’s theirs.

So I guess the Connecticut pattern axe really did make a lot of stumps.

And plant more trees. Guerrilla tree planting. It's easy to gather tree seeds this time of year and give nature a hand by sowing them where more trees are needed. Some will grow and some won't. I do this in my local area with acorns, beech mast and sweet chestnuts.

jo191145 Plant some black locust seeds where those trees were cut down and future wood hoarders will thank you.

Seems my memory deserves an apology from me. UConn also houses the photos with some added features like side by side viewer.

There are some Black Locust in a section of that cutting. For all I know they’ll pop up like crazy now throughout that whole area. Wouldn’t that be a hoot.

Well said! Yes, the Collins Axe Company in Canton was one of the world's largest manufacturer of axes, machetes and other tools. I managed to acquire an old (1940's) Collins Connecticut pattern head that I rehung a few years back.

That is ashamed Joe. Something i enjoy myself is tree "sight seeing". :loco:

Dont get me started on our state govt either.

Since im out that way often ill have to take a ride and check it out.

Any area FHCers might enjoy this in Litchfield county. Ive been there and interesting to see. I remember the 1989 tornados very well.

Bring a saw. Not much is accessible but there’s a tangle of Black Locust and branches near a pull off. Looked like a mess I wouldn’t tangle with but I’m not a Buzzsaw.

Dunno when i can get there to check it out. If you happen to go by that way check it out and get some pics. If there's an ample amount i can scrounge in a couple hours then ill do it. Does it look like its going anywhere?

I’m surprised you have t seen it. No more visits to Hurd park? It’s certainly nothing to get excited about. Looks like more work detangling than wood profited.
Yeah I think it will be removed eventually. They have a huge log loading dump truck parked at the boat launch.

We drive by Hurd to get to her daughters place. Usually every Sunday.

I’m wondering what road you take to get there :) Do you cross the River in East Haddam?
Black Locust should be right around the marker. Just past the boat launch. River side of the road. My big thumb put the marker on the wrong side

66 over the Portland bridge to Cobalt and right onto 151 South then right fork by Hurds first parcking lot.

The only BL ive seen is by that Cobalt 66/151 intersection and that score (still has another load) by the first Hurd parking lot.

That would explain things. I wonder how much further it would be to get to East Haddam bridge for you? I’ve always referred to it as the scenic route since Clinton became a destination. Much nicer drive with Black Locust spottings here and there LOL. Rt 9 up from the shoreline has BL at almost every exit and entrance ramp.
Or to put it differently,, you’re going the wrong way hahahaha
Even if you skip 95 and go west on a small rural route. There’s scores to be seen ;) Longer trip for certain, but scenic.

We leave here roughly around 11 on Sundays and a 45 minute ride there if we dont stop. Im there to "work" as im building the screen porch and have to move around clutter and disorganization, plus I have a few spectators too.

Curiosity got the best of me and i just checked an alternate route that would take us through Higganum, past route 9 then South on 154 and cross by the Goodspeed, North on 149 to 151. 34 miles and 52 minutes for this route vs 44 minutes and 33 miles for our normal route. Maybe ill go the BL route next time.

When i was scrounging a score that Eric Wanderweg had sent me i saw some of the BL on route 9

Hmnn, check Rt 80 to Deep River, then north on 9. Just for haha’s. That’s scenic route aaaall the way :)
I do recall when working in New Haven and 91 was locked up it was no fun trying to find a route east out of the area besides 95.
