    Got that mess cleaned up.
I got tired of paying the chimney sweep to clean my chimney. The last year it cost $225 to get it swept and they did a half arse job.
I bought a chimney brush kit for $75 and a 1/2" for $90. I figure I am ahead of the game. I don't think I needed the 1/2" drill but read somewhere that you needed one to drive the brush. I didn't think it was taking much to drive the brush.
We were working away and turned around and there were soot all 0ver the everything. The filter on the small shop vac wasn't working. Brought the bigger shop vac in and no more problems. Still had a he!! of a mess to clean up though.

Changed some gaskets in the stove and am now ready for the season.

Sitting here checking the news and things on my laptop next to an open window. 75ºF inside, 75ºF outside. Outside there are crickets chirping , frogs croaking , katydids katydidding, some other bugs making their night time sounds and at least 6 Great Horned Owls all taking turns hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hooting, some far off in the distance, some closer, one right next door someplace. They'll all go quiet for 5 or 10 minutes and then start up again. Someone in the distance is burning some eastern white pine. Nice warm, comfortable end of Summer night.

I recently saw on another site a guy commenting that a pre-cut stringer was about $5-6 more than a regular 2x10. Not sure if true but it'd be worth checking on. He was a contractor and was saying one wrong cut or mess up and it makes it not worth cutting your own.

Yeah, that soot sure does make a mess.

Back in the working days, my partner had a bad vacuum and tried cleaning up a fuel oil boiler. That soot got all over the house! Ending up filing a claim to get the house cleaned.

The last guy that used the vacuum and realized it was bad just put it back in the parts room....didn't fix it or tag it or nothing!

I believe it's more or less true. But I thought I already had enough material, so I cut my own. I dont think i screw it up, haha. Ended up with an extra step than I'd figured, and I gave away the 5' piece I had for my other stringer. So I need one more 8'. Now it's just to trace this one out to cut the other.

I start where the hole goes through the wall, so it is parallel. I don't think the bag would work well.
I saw a hack I am going to make. Take a 5 gallon. Drill a hole the size of your rod connector in the middle of the bucket. At the outer rim take a hole saw the size of your shop vac hose and make a hole.
Put a section of the rod in the bucket and attach the brush. Shove the shop vac hose in the hole on the outer rim. Have someone hold the buck up against where the pipe comes through the wall and you run the drill.
I have seen it and it works great. It wouldn't of worked great in my case since the shop vac was the problem.[/QUOTE]
