    There are not many Live Oaks in NE NC and I have not run across a dead one, or any that I had to cut. I’ve heard it’s difficult to split.

    The little manual splitter actually worked alright on the few logs I tried from today's fresh pile. I haven't tried any of the huge ones (especially that one that looks like the boot of a giant), but it has already bested some logs that exceed the limit of "as thick as 6-1/2 in. in diameter (depending on wood density)". My impression is fresh is better than dry and condensed with this grain. Some pics attached. I'll report back with my findings on where it tops out.
