Suuuuuuuure you were! Is grabbing a log considered an errand? It is if you're a FHC member! Or is an "errand" a way to get it by the Mrs? Any "errands" to do tomorrow??? "Ill be back shortly honey, i have an errand to run" "Then why are you taking your chain saw"?
In The Wood Wolverine ’s honor I’m going to fire up a mixed load of elm AND hickory on the first frigid day this winter If I had to pick just one, it would be hickory over elm. BUT… I seem to come across more elm than hickory and my stacks definitely reflect that.
If he burned enough of the 2, there is one clear winner. SBH has MUCH more BTU's per cord. There really is no contest here.
Same...shaggy beats everything else I've used...Locust left me disappointed...not that its bad, just didn't live up to the hype...and the shaggy overperformed from the charts.
Luckily I have a few stove loads of Shagbark to burn this year. Not a lot obviously but enough to get a better feel for the stuff. This stack is under my deck and I should be getting to the bottom third (top 2/3 is all red maple) sometime in December.
Im wondering if there is a big btu difference between green fresh cut BL and the long down/dead "petrified" BL that Eric VW speaks of often. I notice a difference in the density. Im in no way knocking SBH as ill take it when i can and a scarce score for me.
This was a tree that came down next door to me during Isaias in August 2020. I split it on the thin side to dry it faster, so it should be good to go at over 2 years in my stacks.
I think so. Have you put a MM to it? Geez, two plus years already! Still lots of down BL "hiding" around here from that storm and the tornado later that month.
I just finished splitting what I got so far. Looks to be a few cold days worth of heat It’s only stacked in a temporary location for the time being. Once I drop a load of wood off to my brother-in-law, I’ll have room under cover for this hickory.
That's a nice score. What I found that works great on the vines is a pair of loppers. Doesn't sling juice anywhere, you can cut vine, grab it with loppers and pull it off. Then cut logs. Lots of it on those oaks we are cutting.
I went back to this score hoping to fill up on the rest of this hickory and the large ash that was on the ground there. Just about all of it was gone! I did manage to buck a few small hickory rounds, and scooped up some limb wood a little further down the road. There was more ash further into the woods, but after several test cuts I could see it was getting too punky. Oh well, a few hickory crumbs is better than nothing. While I was out this afternoon with the kids, I also managed to get a bunch more black walnuts too
This is how it’s been for me this entire year, a little here, a little there…Today was supposed to be a heaping truckload, but it wasn’t in the cards I guess. I think I know who got it though. A coworker of mine lives a quarter mile away from this spot and he was telling me last week about scrounging along that road. I’m just glad it’s going to heat someone’s home and not rot down in a ditch.
