I see you have a Jack Russell there.....several of us have Jacks! You're fitting in like a duck to water here!
WOW!! Some great pics there. Love that guitar. Did he just make the body, or the fretboard and everything too? I've been looking at some chainsaw mills myself. I think I know what I'm getting myself for Christmas now Looks like you have a few different ones. Which do you like the best? Or are some of them better for certain tasks?
Yes my son Alan made the whole guitar from start to finish he went to collage for 2 years and studied musical instrument manufacturer and repair . As for the chain sawmill the M 7 is great and very quick to mill up logs up to 24 inches . If you have a way to get up on the mill . The big mill system is the one I like to use as the large log can be left on the ground and 8 screws screw 2 brackets onto the end of the log and you clip the guide rail onto the brackets and away you go you can cut from half inch up to 8 inch beams or slabs . The most important thing on a Chainsawmill is the chain it Must be kept in tip top edge . It is a ripping chain and the cutting angle is only 10 degrees in like a cross cutting chain is 25 or 30 degrees .. I have a toy at of 6 different size bars for my saws from 20 inch up to 48 inch all driven by a sthil 660 that has paid for it's self over and over it has San flat out for 5 years . I have 100 chains in tip top shape and ready to go all the time as in some logs have a lot of dirt and grit inside them such as Beech and they are very very quick to dull a chain some 8 ft cuts could dull 2 chains .I edge and repair all my own saws chains I have an Orogen electric grinder and a diamond wheel not cheap for edging the chains and it is a must if you want a top class edge . I buy my chains in 200 ft rolls and it works out at about 1/3 of the price over here to buy it this way of course a also had to buy the chain beaker and chain link joiner . So the best bit of kit to start off in my opinion is the Logosol big mill system with the timber jig this is not to expensive o and of course a sthil 660 . So if ye have any more questions please ask. Terry Goggin www.irishchainsawmills . Com
As for my track machine it is old it is ugly but it does what it says on the tin the tractor part is the main drive and there is also a drive on the trailer . It would go up a WALL it will carry 3.5 ton of timber anywhere no bother and the grab is handy for lifting large logs onto the M7 mill it runs on diesel and if I am working it hard for a day 5 gallons of diesel will do . It is as basic as chit but every thing works and it is easy to repair myself. I will take more pictures and put them up in the next few weeks when I am up in my wood as I am milling else ware at the moment it is called a Farmi Trac 3.5 you should see them at work on YouTube terry goggin. www.irishchainsawmills.com
Question on the logosol, from a quick look one would think that you can get off a little from the small guide that is riding on top of the cut. But if you are sing it regularly that probably isnt the case. Do you have any issues with that? Do you have problems with it not riding level?
It is vital to get the first cut right ( good and flat ) that's assuming the saw is set up right on the mill . I like to take off a good thick half moon type slab on my first cut because that gives you a wide surface for your next cut you must have as wide a surface as you can to keep the guide as level as possible . And if your first half moon slab is to thick you can flip it over and take another slab off the flat surface ... You must have a wide surface under the guide or it will rock all over the place when cutting and if the first cut is not right all the rest of the cuts will not either . Does that what your on about. ??
very nice, I fixed a few of the pictures for you. I really want to get a mill, Ive got a number of logs sitting down there that I want to mill.
I looked them up last night, the basic setup is $199 http://www.logosol.us/sawmills/big-mill-system/big-mill-timberjig.html The bigger setup including rails is $999 http://www.logosol.us/sawmills/big-mill-system/big-mill-timberjig.html
Their other setup which is very similar to an Alaskan mill is $599 http://www.logosol.us/sawmills/big-mill-system/big-mill-lsg.html and the addition of the rails with the mill on this one is $2,000
The big mill basic was $599, and that came with one rail. The big mill ext is 2k? I'm not sure I'd be able to justify the $2k but the $600 might fly
Here is the result of some of my milling on a vaulted roof on my house and a few chopping boards and my truck a 46 ton propane tanker.
