A colder-than-usual winter is expected to arrive much sooner, Overall, the Farmers'Almanac predicts a snow-heavy winter across the nation. Those in highest cold-weather peril will find themselves in the middle of an active storm track that is predicted to run from the western Gulf of Mexico all the way to the northeast, across the Virginias and touching upon New York state and New England, all areas that are used to bracing for the coldest winter across the country.

States positioned to the south of the predicted storm track shouldn't expect a mild winter, though. The outlet warns of chilly temperatures, wintry mixes of snow, sleet and ice, and pretty frequent storms. Moving north to the central states, residents can hope for a white Christmas as the area is scheduled to receive plenty of snow. South central states, though, will likely see the harshest weather by early January. The Southwest sets itself apart from the rest of the country as the Farmers' Almanac predicts a less-than-normal amount of precipitation throughout the winter season.

We're due for one. I think I have had for sure two maybe three mild winters in a row.

The hummingbirds left about a week or so before they usually do. Not sure if that's a sign of things to come.

I was getting a lot of hits on my nectar feeders about a month ago. 2 weeks ago it stilled to nearly nothing. For the last week or so each day is different. Now, I'm pretty sure last month I had two pairs (or a pair and their offspring) and now I'm down to 1 pair.

But, there for about a week, yellow jackets started trying to hit the feeders (they get nothing, but they are attracted by the color) and I watched a bird veering off multiple times because of that. I've had a lot of late summer/fall bloomers in the last week (turtleheads, autumn sweet clematis New England asters), so they may not need to hit the feeder as hard. Also, I just realized I set up a bird bath about 3 weeks ago, so coming to the nectar feeders may have had more to do with hydration than feeding (we've been in drought most of the summer).

The Ojibwa on the Reservation I worked on had a lot of sayings and signs to predict the coming winter, but my favorite was: “You can tell how cold the winter will be by the size of white man’s woodpile.”

I hope we get at least a couple good storms this winter. I actually enjoy it when a blizzard hits, especially if I can't make it into work :) My snow blower barely got used last winter. There were plenty of cold snaps but very little snow accumulation.

Not good news for the southwest of the US. They need wetter than normal not drier.

Being retired, don't really care much but I've found that what the Almanac says and what it actually is, is usually the opposite. I don't plan on going out in any snowstorm and my new renters next door, he owns a plow truck so the tractor plow and blower stay in the barn this winter. Got plenty of wood pellets and corn and propane tanks are full.

    Bring it on...

There is 2 different farmers Almanacs, they both usually say opposite things. They are great at giving a vague but true forecast such as it will snow in January and be cold. Goes ever more the same when they break it down to weeks. First week of January a chance of snow. Second week cold with a chance of snow. I’ve read them before and mostly a bunch of nonsense and useless trivia.

Interesting. Hummers are out in full force around here still. They are all typically gone by October 1st.

I'm ready for a nasty winter. Got plenty of nicely dried firewood. I am not impressed with the tires on my truck, as they are harder rubber now, but there's plenty of tread on them, despite being more of a highway tread. My short work commute makes it much less of an issue. I'll put new tires on it at some point.

Hope we get totally snowed in for a week or more. Gives me ample time to snuggle up to my wife (if she will let me that is). We stock enough food and drink to go a month or more without ever leaving the house.

Good with that anyway as I really don't like people much.

That is me and I'm 100% good with the forecast. Probably won't happen but is if does, the cuddle factor kicks in as well as reading some good books.

I bought a new snowblower, so way below average is appropriate.
