So the last couple of days I have been scrounging the local tree dump. A couple of days ago some branches show up in a pile. No biggie, crown pieces mostly. "Could be a tree trim, I'll keep an eye on it" I said to myself. Second day, more crown. Not just a trailer load but a neatly organized pile. Way to good for a guy with a saw, this guy is pro. BINGO, I spot him down the road driving to the dump with a load of crown as I'm leaving. Third day, more crown and some larger stuff. All hard Maple. NICE! I collect what I can and then start dreaming of the next day when I get a wild hair and start driving around my small town hoping to spot the guy again. Yep, I found him. He is cleaning up the last of the crown and starting to organize the big stuff when I pull up to the house with the job. "Hey, whatcha gonna do with that wood?" I said. He replies "Its going to the dump." So I say "could I help you with that?" Then he says " you can have it all!" o_O:D

So I start shooting the breeze with my new friend. We're talking saws and trees and the usual when he tells me that he just took over the area for a guy that is retiring. He doesn't really know what else to do with the wood. Long story short, I give him my phone number. He asks me how much I need. I tell him that I need about 10 cord. He says "we can do that this year!".
    HECK YEAH!!!!!

While I'm talking to the tree guy, a friend of mine just happens to show up and tells me that he lost my phone number and that the place that we cut ash at last year is looking to get rid of 5 more this fall.
AND, while I'm there getting this nice hard maple, the neighbors are telling me that they are cutting trees sometime and I could have that too!

It is going to be interesting to see how this pans out.
I would give you pics, but I'm too pooped from hauling two trailer loads of maple tonight.

Wow...Sounds like if you can get 4-5 cords c/s/s you will be ok no matter what. After 6 months seasoning, even if not perfect, this new ash / maple can be mixed in with the dryer stuff, and will give you ample heat this winter. You can even burn wastefully you have so much. I would advise that you pay this tree service a generous tip and encourage him to work with you next year before someone else makes him a better offer.

HAH....you might want to stop @ the emergency room to have the golden horseshoe removed from your backside.........LOL. Seriously though, great find, hope it works out for you. Firecracker makes a good point about greasing his wheels though. Good connection to keep open.

What great story, looks like Karma and the stars just happened to align for you. If it all works out for you I'm thinking you may have a sore back for a little while.
Lets keep folks from taking it too, get a big dog with a big bark.

Congrats on the hookup! Looks like you might have to update your signature there! Wait, what am I thinking :loco:  - you can never have enough wood!

One of the guys on my volleyball team is a tree climber. I keep telling him that if he needs a place to dump, my driveway is always open! He hasn't delivered any yet, but he's hasn't been over to my house yet either.

I'm hiring him in a couple weeks for a job anyway, helping me unsnag a 24" red maple. It's leaning on a couple of really nice sugar maple, and knocking over a good size black cherry. Once he witnesses my firewood obsession, I'm sure he'll be sending some my way.

Tree service wood is good wood. It has been my MO for about 15 years. Except for a few pieces from neighbors all my firewood (and smoke wood) has all come from a couple of tree guys.

Now your next and most difficult task will be to train your new source to make consistent cuts to the exact length that you need. That is the part that seems to be impossible.

Sounds like the stuff that firewood hoarders' dreams are made of.

I got a load of oak last week for about 1/2 price tree length with a a half dozen nice oak saw logs for the sawmill. I was ridin high for a few days pretty pleased with myself. :)
