    I had 7 rounds to go. Was trying to finish before I returned the splitter to my buddy. It was weird it wasn't even really loading it up when it finally sheared. Had pushed it pretty hard in some oak last week, but it was moving through the pecan pretty easy then pop and it stopped moving. I knew exactly what happened. At least it busted on me so I could fix it before I gave it back to him and it blew out on him after a half hour or less!

    I called him and said I won't be returning it tomorrow I will have to pick up some couplers and fix it. He said he had some in the shed that he would bring to work so I could fix it. I said I would buy one or pay him for it. I will just buy another one for extra to replace the one I use so that he can have one for his shelf . Well that stinks...but you didn't do that. I mean yeah, it finally failed while you had it, but those jaws have been running without a spider in between for a long time.

    :rofl: :lol: .... Might be... but in this case it goes back in the early days of FHC... Its kinda of a classic now....

    But as brenndatomu ... its been cracked/fractured for quite a while and last night just happened to be the night it failed....

    It looks to me that the rubber spider might have given up long before it sheard itself. The metal fingers that sheared off are two different colors as if it was half worn through.
    Keep this in the back of your mind as something to check on occasion.

    Should be an easy fix.

    That was my question. Looking at parts I see a rubber spider insert also listed but I saw no sign before of one ever in there. I have peeked at it in the past but it's not visible.

    I noticed the older metal and the fresh shear.

    The rubber spider keeps the jaws from wearing out, like they did, because it was run so long without the spider.
    Me personally, I'd let him bring you the parts that he says he already has, and you put them on...seems fair to me, considering he obviously hasn't checked it in, well, never...or close to it. Or maybe he did...and that's why he had the parts acquired already

    Back when I was doing hydraulic work servicing industrial trash compactors this was a common problem.
    Replacing a half worn spider on a preventative maintinance service was not out of the ordinary.

    Just keep an eye on it , and if it starts to go away just change it.
    The coupler halves will never wear out with the rubber in there

    Have you seen the JIS wrap spiders? They can be retrofitted to these older ones and no disassembly to install (assuming you have good access to the coupling)

    I have seen them but never actually used them.
    I have been out of that field for a while now so my hydraulic work has cut back to just my own stuff and friends.

    Ok he didn't know there was a spider supposed to be in there. He put it together last time without one. He said when he replaced the original there wasn't anything in there. I said yea probably the original one broke apart and fell out then it sheared the coupler.

    I got the couplers he got. I will get him a spider fix it right and replace the parts with correct parts. I'm not worried about it. They don't cost much money. I borrow his splitter when ever I need it. That's the only reason I haven't bought one is I can use his whenever I need. Also I don't have to store it.

    Yea I try to take care of stuff I borrow and return it better to show my appreciation.

    This time I have already put a new hydro filter on it...you know they need a new one every few decades:bug:o_O. Also changed the oil in it. But the later is no big deal. It's a little 6hp engine and doesn't even hold a quart and I have gallons of oil around here. So I can say for sure when I return it, it will be better than when I got it.

    Ok fixed it this morning... correctly.

    In this picture I am clearly just holding it there cause once I put it together the correct way a safety shield covers it and you can only see it from underneath. IMG_20220903_112321215_HDR.jpg

    Looks to me that someone has made some type of change.
    The nut and 4 washers between the plate and side of the engine does not look factory.
    Functional = yup
    Original = nope

    I'm betting that's a replacement engine.
