A quick niner that’s almost as sweet as a nooner

I’ve been driving by this small score of black birch since January. It’s obviously not going anywhere, so today I decided to help it along. Not having much spare time, I bucked what I could and loaded it up. On my last cut I stepped on a yellow jacket nest, so I took the hint and called it a day after the ninth round. Guess my stamina’s not what it used to be
I love the smell of black birch and it definitely throws the heat on a frigid night.

It ended up being the perfect amount fill out the rest of this not-quite-a-cord stack. The back half is all sugar maple from June, the bottom half of the front is white oak from late July, with today’s black birch topping it off. In the center of the pile are some random pieces of red maple, beech, and a little black gum.

 

I dunno...I think I'd have went for the nooner and then picked the wood up later in the evening when it was cooler...

The rest might be there next time you head back yet.
However, in the couple years of scraping up roadkill scores, I've never had someone cleanup as soon as I was gone from the score like happened last week. ( Ash score augus 2022) Its not a trend yet, but it is highly unusual for me. I'm wondering if the mood is changing over what it has been over the last couple years?

I have a little B. Birch, but have to wait a couple years before I get to it.

Good score though, you're right every little bit helps, is a day or two big oil doesn't make money!

Yeah I’d say 95% solid. Some trunk sections were starting to get spalted, but not soft yet. Another 6 months on the ground and I won’t want it. Guess I better get the rest soon

 

Sirchopsalot that’s my 7 year old in the truck. When he’s in the mood he’ll help me out moving wood all afternoon. Today, not so much But he’s fun just hanging around. Trying to enjoy the last of the summer days and go in the pool a few more times before the weather turns.
I guarantee the birch will be there until/whenever/if I decide to grab it. It’s on a dirt road that sees maybe 2 dozen cars a day, a good amount of that traffic being utility trucks since Eversource has a substation up the road. I have been noticing a lot more roadside wood disappearing this year though. One black locust I watched for a year and a half vanished last week, and a couple days ago I went to get a load of oak that had been cut and tossed aside for a month, only to find that it too had been scooped up. Good thing I’m stocked up as it is.

I know there was a pile of unsplit rounds that was sitting in an empty lot in town for a year or more and I was gonna try to find the lots owner, but never did, then one day I see a picture of it pop up on FBMP and it said $50...I messaged and said I'll come get the wood cleaned up, but only for $0...they said nope, $50...I'm thinking that pile has sat there that long, and the city has a spot about a block away that residents can come cut wood for free, so no way they are gonna get someone to pay $50 for a pile of unknown species (and condition) unsplit wood that has been sitting there over a year...well sonofagun if it didn't disappear in a few weeks! Oh well, its not like I'm lacking in places to score wood for free

 

Yeah I’m thinking the number of people are increasing who never did roadside scrounges but are now thinking about it.
May explain why scores get scoffed up after someone else starts. “Look honey, someone else stopped and took some why can’t I”?

I'm also happy we're setup for it and not behind the ball. And thanks to the wisdom and ideas from everyone here, we got a serious leg up.
If that guy had stopped by (who scooped up what we left at the ash score), I'd have had a blast cutting him a load. Maybe after my trailer is full....but yeah, bring it down, tell me what size ya want.
Afaiac, the more people have wood css and not left rotting, the better everyone will be this winter and spring.
I wish more people would take their storm shelves more seriously too. Even just a little. For those willing to do their own thing, Im willing to be part of their solution. Not because I'm any good, but that's one less cold starving individual or family in need when times are really skinny.

You feeling okay? I hear ya, life and time restraints. Was that on route 9? Reminds me of the BB i cut there couple Summers ago and found a yellow jackets nest.

Gonna get the rest? You still have to drive by it?

 

The bottom log from my get it while its hot score was BB directly on the ground and i was surprised how "green" it still was despite 18 months there. Filled out a half cord BB stack for me as well.

 

on a similar note the Beech logs I brought home in April of 21 were laid on Tree of Heaven runners. The Beech left in log form began drying and degrading. I was shocked how well those TOH runners fared. They looked like the day I cut them down. Moist and green inside with no rot at all. I’ve read TOH will rot in split form right in the stacks but these held up fine.

 

This was on River Road, same backroad we cut the BL on in January 2021. This past winter/spring, a tree crew came in and pushed back the wood line from the road a good 20-30ft. Huge piles of logs everywhere, but they disappeared before I had a chance to cherry pick. I've been carpooling to work so thankfully I don't have to drive by it every day I'm still on the fence about it.

 

Well cut down the fence and stack it. Then go back for the wood.

 

I can see what is going to happen next...........EW will be posting about some white truck with construction cones arrayed alongside the road was spotted scrounging the rest of the pile!!!
