A friend alerted me to tree pieces near the road in my home town, about 20 minutes from home.
Brad, not too far from where you and I cut a couple years back.
It was all Ash, looked like Neversource had EAB kills near the lines cut. No tops, just trunks and larger branches. Whomever did the cutting must have known locals would grab the remains.
Its been sitting there aboit 2 weeks. So it was still green, and easy to split.
This isn't the big ash score Im waiting on, that has yet to happen.

The kiddo and I cut one pile up, split and loaded, despite the rain coming in. There are two more heaps of large trunk pieces we didnt even get to, all cake to get, easy to split, and on a relatively safe road.
The wood just split on the right side is still on the move!

This is the first load in the new wagon. It will definitely get another 1x6 PT plank on each side, loose stacking is really the only way on a roadkill scrounge.....stacking would take too much time.

We finished off my friend's stacks, so I wont be back there except to add to my stacks at his place. Its kinda nice knowing he is set for two years, 6 cord presently.

Last pic is the stump, still rooted and not touched. Some things I've never seen.

Ash is a great score (I wish there was more still worth cutting in my area), having your son there working hard and making memories is even better, and that new trailer is sweet to boot

Thats some primo ash for sure. Id be all over that like flies on you know what. Most ash i cut these days has loose bark. Keep up the great hoarding there guys!

Never have seen a railroad spike in any log before.

New trailer looks great full of splits. Hope it serves you well for many years.

    You going back for more?

Yup, liking the trailer. No more worrying aboit overloading it!
The old one moved us to the house, hauled our entire roof to the dump, a piano, and hauled 46 ish cord for us and friends....6 of that was given to us already CSS.

Cash, I'm liking that ash shouldn't take 3 years to season. Hopefully I can burn that next year and leave the Oak to dry an additional year.

Eric Wanderweg If Im not working tomorrow dayshift, we're heading out around 8am. Feel free to join. We'll have 3 bodies to cut split and load you up. Took the boy and I a couple hours maybe to cut and split and load our trailer. He split the whole time, and I did some just to take a break from cutting. You're more than welcome to join.

Brad, deff heading back on days I have night shifts. I have other things to study, so trying to scrounge around that. We're not in a critical situation with wood, I think this is year 5 we're working on here. So if things dont work out for this roadkill, Ill not loose any sleep. But, I hate to see it there rotting away. With oil prices slated to go up, I cannot fathom why its there long enough for me to come get it.

Heading out again today. Will have 2 helpers. Hoping to get a good load today. Cutting to 20" starting today, for the rest of the summer.

Well, one set of hands took a day off.
Stumpy and I cut and split a full load, about half a cord.
I stacked it 6" overhanging the pallet edges, and ended up with 3 rows of logs.. i started with shorts in the middle (there were a few) but discovered I could get a full 20" middle row.
So it will have to sit for 2 years, but that gets a whole lot of wood in once those pallets are full.
I stacked it to a little over 4' tall today. I bet I get another foot taller before calling it done.

    Thanks!!
second load split by hand. Its also nice not having splitter trash.
some splits ended up a little larger. This stack can sit for 2 years.

I have to find new plastic top cover though....overlapping layers get complicated.

I think we got more wood by stacking in the trailer rather than tossing a loose pile. It took a little more time, but not much.

That’s some beautiful firewood. Nice score.
I use EPDM but when I overlap I fold the bottom layer back, put a few small splits in it and lay the top layer over it. Any water that gets through the seam hits the channel underneath and is forced out the sides.
I did t even know what Ash was until the EAB hit. Very few specimens on my property. I’m gonna miss it tho.

    Good idea.
Course it would be cool to try a heavier material too.
It just needs to be neat and tidy looking.
If youre up this way tomorrow morning, mid to late morning, we'll load you up with some ash.
    Werkin tonight.

Way to get it done Dave & Stumpy! Ive never split to finished size roadside, only sectioned.

That made for some gorgeous splits. Always nice to have a nice straight tree to make firewood out of.

    I did not yet.
Im tempted to remove it, its just going to rust and rot away. I forgot if there are markings on the spike to figure out where it came from.
Its pretty well in there, half or less is sticking out.

The road goes up a hill to the right just beyond that bend. The only vehicle we worried about was an amazon truck. Those drivers weren't from around these parts, and weren't prepared for the hill, corner, or speed.
