I’ve been eyeing this downed tree that has laid on my neighbor’s fence for years. I asked and he was happy to have me take care of it. Originally I thought it was a dead and barkless red oak. After Slocum had scored a similar tree earlier this year that was determined to be cherry, I did some investigation. Sure enough that’s what this is. It’s amazing it’s as solid as it is. I still have a few more feet of trunk I’d like to go after, but this was a good start on a hot day. About a 70 foot trek through the woods to get the rounds onto my side. If I get them split and top covered soon, I should be able to burn it in the spring of 2023.

I scored some oak (maybe it was cherry) that looked just like that. Most of it was not worth keeping, but I got some that was good. Nice find!!
Abandoned tree laying in the woods causes sleepless nights! Nice stuff there Eric. Ive recently (past year or so) discovered the rot resistance of cherry heartwood myself. Off the ground even better. Ill grab when when found.
Had I known it was cherry when I first moved in a couple years ago, I would've gone after it then. Still, the rounds I got were all pretty solid. I'll tell you what though, I had a bear of a time splitting them by hand yesterday. Each round took at least half a dozen solid blows before they were halved. Almost like the wood was becoming petrified or something
Yeah, sometimes that cherry can get rather twisty. Not my favorite to hand split. More often than not its twisty. Ive grabbed some smaller long dead stuff like that, but nothing of size. Ready to burn a plus for me.
