In the midst of a drought here in New England and i noticed this stack listing severely. Been stacking wood here for a few years and ive never seen it do that. 16" long splits with wood lath sleepers. It only gets a few hours of afternoon sun. Shrink, yes, but not list this bad. Cottonwood splits in back. They were almost touching the top.
Same here in PA regarding firewood drying and stacks moving this year. I have had several 16" long 3.5' high single rank stacks fall over!
That front board that the splits sit on, it isn't bent/sagged? And yes, good summer for drying firewood. I'd take 5in of rain, though. Not all at once. Even at that, the deficit would only be halved.
Brad, our longer street side stack (7 cord stack) was listing pretty good too. But it was just the West side. Or more the west side anyway. I also re tied all the paracord. It was looser thay you know who, but due to the stacks shrinking and settling. A cord of Red oak looses 1360# (163G) of water, or, 21.82 cu ft. That comes to a pile of water 7" deep on a 4x8 stack. Being that the wood wont settle 100% with air voids, it still is reasonable to see a stack drop a few inches as it dries.
Lol Well that explains it. I'm not the smartest fella around, but the term had me stumped. No pun intended.
Definitely a good summer for drying wood. Hopefully that won't fall over. I've restacked part of a stack before because I knew if I didn't I'd be re-stacking the whole thing later.
Listing. I'm a landlubber now, but come from a short but good line of sailors, Navy, boat builders, sailors. Some of which I am, some I aspire to be. Lotsa terms cross-over. "Lee ward" is my favorite slaughter of a useful term. Makes me cringe when boaters in general mess that up. Sca
Yes there is no doubt this has been a great summer for drying firewood. Lots of heat and sun with little to no rain. Not good for farmers but good for wooders.
I've noticed my stacks do this many times over. Especially when I cut lots of apple. It didn't stack well and would end up needing more maintenance to keep it straight and upright.
